Books or plays turned into movies

Original post by cherish83

Hey,

I was just asked to teach English II at the college I teach at. However, I never taught the class before so its a whole new challenge for me. In the past teachers have assigned plays or playwrights to students to research, write a paper on and give an oral report. Since its the summer, and I want to make it more interesting and use analytical skills, I was thinking of having them read a book or play that was turned into a movie, then watch the movie in class and analyze both. The class is small, but made up of 5 guys, so I need a book that would appeal to them. (too bad it wasnt all girls or I would have them read the Notebook!! )

And it starts Monday!!!

Thanks in advance!

because it's boys! DH HATED the twilight movie

A co-worker suggested twilight too. But I never read and would not be able to read it this weekend and the semester starts on Monday.

What about Jane Austen?

Sense & Sensibility

maybe she's a little too mushy?

I think I may choose two to work with. I'm thinking to Kill a Mockingbird. What I want them to do is read the book, then we'll watch the movie in class. And then they have to write a paper analyzing both and do research on a theme within it

1. The Outsiders
2. Death of a Salesman
3. Lord of the Flies
4. To Kill a Mockingbird

OMG it would be easier if it were girls. It's an english class so it should be lit right? nothing lame like X-Men or a Stephen King book right?

Outsiders and Death of a Salesman were great too! I think Outsiders might be to young though. I read it in 6th grade.

i don't think it's young; there's a lot that goes on it that book. I loooove it.

also:
Stand by Me (I forget the book, it's really a short story by Stephen King)
West Side Story was a play first right?
Gone with the Wind those boys would FLIP if you gave them that - it's like 600 pages.

I'm trying to think of stuff that is worthy of discussion.

Did they make Catch-22 into a movie? that was a great book also.

Stand by Me may be good since is a short story. I'm going to look that up now. Thanks!

OOOh that would be awesome!! You can send it to [email protected]

I'll send it now. We read both Frankenstein & Hamlet, so both obviously have corresponding movies. I think Frankenstein is a great novel b/c it is neither feminine nor masculine. I'll send you the syllabus now!

I think you should make them read Pride & Prejudice and watch the BBC version of the movie that came out on A&E a few eyars ago.

I love Jane Austin and so many movies have been made form her books.

I know you have 5 guys in there but maybe this will broaden their literary horizons.

You could also do Romeo and Juliet and show them the movie set in that time period and also the one that was set in modern times (w/ Claire Danes & Leo DiCaprio).

I love Jane Austen as well but didn't suggest any because boys don't exactly love her. I know not a single guy even from my english classes who loved her. she's pretty feminist and appeals to mostly women.

you mean the one with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth? If so, I love you and want to be your best friend i have it on VHS and DVD - it is the BEST version EVER.

That's exactly the movie . It really is the best version ever. The one with keira Knightley couldn't compare to that movie. I want to get the DVD. I had it on VHS but over played it and now I don't even own a VHS. I think that will have to be a gift from DH for out dating anniversary

You have great taste

That's why I think the boys should watch it...it challenges them. Love that Jane Austen had a feminist twist to her in a time where feminism wasn't even a thought.

I had an english course in college called 'Re-imagining Gender' while we did not read this book, many of the books we read challenged the entire class and made for some great discussions.

Re: Books or plays turned into movies

Something liek the Da Vinci Code or Angels & Demons is just begging for trouble, b/c of their obvious opposition to certain religions. I'd steer clear of that. Also, you kinda sorta have to pick something 'literature' and not just a random book that got made into a movie.

Someone suggested Lord of the Flies-I read that in high school and then watched the Simpson's episode and I know there's a movie but we didn't watch that. I think that would appeal to guys too. Good luck!
