can someone explain something to me please?

can someone explain something to me please?

This may cause me to look stupid, but I am just so curious. Isn't there a whole 'seperation of church and state' thing???? Why are they doing a prayer, and talking about God in his speech?

I don't know much about politics, so I apologize if it's a stupid question. :-/

I thought it was a little odd and even a little inappropriate. Unless there's something I'm not getting

from wikipedia:
The term most often refers to the combination of two principles: secularity of government and freedom of religious exercise.[2]

basically church cant affect the LAWS and govt cant stop practicing your religion
BUT if you choose to you can have your faith be a part of the ceremony

I think its nice personally!

That is fine, I just thought that they weren't allowed to mesh the two at any time. Thank you!

i know that it CAN alienate some people so maybe not the best route?

most presidents do a prayer before during this process. I personally don't care for it but its done and people seem to accept it.

so do i. although im sure alot of people will disagree with it, i am sure that if i were being sworn into presidency and taking on such a huge job, i would want my religion included

I think since this is Pres. Obama's swearing in--he should be allowed to incorporate a prayer and such....so while it might *seem* like its a mesh of church and state, its what he wishes for his day of celebration. I'm sure if a president was sworn in and he did not want any prayer or anything secular whatsoever, they would do that. (However, I highly doubt this nation would ever vote a president who is not of some type of faith.)

it is allowed, but if you do not believe in it, then you don't have to say the prayer along with them.

oh, I wasn't talking about President Obama (that has a nice ring to it). The man who was speaking before him is who I was referring to. Some parts of his speech I found to be referencing religion.

Like Tilde said, religion cannot influence decisions. If they want to incorporate religion in their personal speeches I think its fine.

It doesn't have to influence decisions but on a day where we're all excited to celebrate the same thing I think the speeches should be aimed at something we all can relate to, KWIM? Again, I am not referring to Obama

I see what youre saying but this is his HUGE day and to have to sacrifice something he believes in just to make non-religious people happy doesnt seem right. Im not the most religious person but I found it nice. Theres plenty we can all relate to. Anything we dont, we can ignore I guess. I wasnt too happy with the pastor he chose but then again Im sure most pastors are against gay marriage

Did you catch his ending? If you're brown, may you get around; if you're yellow, may you be mellow, if you're white, may you do right; if you're red, may you get ahead.

I really don't care for it either, but it is commonly practiced. He was respectful enough not to attack other nontraditional faiths and President Obama gave a lovely speech. I hope all works out. A lot of people are counting on him.

That is when I turned it off--who was that guy (sorry to sound ignorant, I just heard that lined and turned it off!)?

Anyway, I really was excited that Obama mentioned non-believers in his speech.
