can someone explain something to me please?

Original post by SFAR89

This may cause me to look stupid, but I am just so curious. Isn't there a whole 'seperation of church and state' thing???? Why are they doing a prayer, and talking about God in his speech?

I don't know much about politics, so I apologize if it's a stupid question. :-/

From what I have seen Presidents always mention God in their inaugration, also when they are running. Religion as others have said can not be a factor in the Presidents decision making, but they always mention god.

I thought his speech was really great.

As much as there may be separation of church and state, it has always been around in politics. Our money states 'in God we trust,' and our pledge includes 'God' in it.

I was thinking the same thing, it seemed a bit odd to me

Just to clarify the initial question--the constitution basically states that the government cannot endores a religion/church and pretty much visa versa. For example, the president can't tell everyone that they need to be Christian or go to Church X. Also, churches cannot endores specific candidates--they may lose their tax exempt status if they do.

I think a lawyer could explain this better, but this is what I remember from HS government.

Did you catch his ending? If you're brown, may you get around; if you're yellow, may you be mellow, if you're white, may you do right; if you're red, may you get ahead.

That was bizarre.

That is when I turned it off--who was that guy (sorry to sound ignorant, I just heard that lined and turned it off!)?

Anyway, I really was excited that Obama mentioned non-believers in his speech.

I couldn't believe he said that. Really annoyed me also....like what does it even mean???? Are you a wannabe Dr. Seuss????
