Re: Can someone recommend their tomato Sauce from a can!!!
My dad would KILL me if he knew I was going to say this but Barilla's is really good! I would meet my maker if my father (100% Italian) knew I ate sauce from a jar!!! My excuse = I'm waiting for my cousin to teach me my great grandmother's recipe!

Re: Can someone recommend their tomato Sauce from a can!!!
When I buy jarred sauce, I get Giada's Creamy tomato sauce from Target (umm, it's delicious, I buy like 5 at a time)I also get Rao's when it's on sale (it can be up to $10 per jar!
)Listen here though!
Buy a can of 'Crushed Tomatoes.' The medium size, not the reg can, not the huge one, right in the middle, i think it's like the equivalent of 2 reg cans)
Pour in a sauce pan, season with garlic, basil, parsley, and pepper. Add a little olive oil too.
Cook.
Add some grated romano and/or parmesan. Eyeball, it, maybe 1-2 palms full. (this will take the place of salt, but if you want, add a little)
Cook.
If it's a little tangy, add a little sugar, start with a tablespoon.
Bam! Homemade Sauce.

throw a few grated carrots in there, helps with the acidity.

You can if you want, but even when I don't use it it's fine. I don't always have it in the house.

If I need a Jar sauce, I use any of the Classico sauces - they're pretty good..but usually when I make sauce, I make so much that I freeze it and have it for months!

so far the one that DH actually doesnt HATE is walbaum's organic version (i forgot the brand name, but its like $3-4/jar) of garlic & basil

I've never had sauce from a jar. When my in-laws make it I won't eat it lol. I think my family would disown me if I did.

Re: Can someone recommend their tomato Sauce from a can!!!
If I have to, I buy Rao's but it's much cheaper to make your own and it only takes around 5 minutes to prep.-I use San Marzano whole tomatoes in a can. It ranges from 28-32 oz. in a can
-6 cloves of peeled garlic
-pepper
-salt
-sugar
-crushed red (hot) pepper
-3-4 pieces of fresh basil. I usually buy a bunch, I will stand there and wash them and then freeze the leaves, neatly laying them out on plastic wrap and folding them over row by row. It's sort of a labor of love but anything for fresh basil!
-olive oil
Heat more or less a 1/4 cup of oil, everything is eyeballed so use your best judgement, then add your whole cloves of garlic and about a 1/4 teaspoon of the red pepper over a medium flame
When the garlic turns golden brown, add your can of tomatoes. Add your salt, pepper and sugar (all about a 1/4 tsp) and then let cook it come to a boil for about 2 minutes. Then taking a handblender, puree your sauce according to how chunky you like your sauce. Adjust your sauce with the salt, sugar and pepper to how you like it. Every can of tomatoes tastes different so you will need to add more or less every time!
Let the sauce cook for about 20 minutes over a medium low flame and then add your basil. Either you can tear or ribbon cut your basil. Let cook for an additional 2-3 minutes and then serve our your favorite pasta.

Re: Can someone recommend their tomato Sauce from a can!!!
I have only made my own sauce and it is SO easy and so delicious.....I buy Contadina Crushed tomatoes.....then, I open the large can and pour it into the chopper/grinder thing I have.....in it, I put garlic powder, olive oil, salt and pepper and run it for a minute or 2 in the chopper/grinder. Then, I take it all out and pour it into a saucepan and let it cook for about 20 minutes and add oregano....the longer u leave it, the better the flavor...delicious and I am never buying sauce in a jar again - its SO SO SO good.
