Kinda think a cash bar at any family event is tacky.....but I think it would be fine to do beer and wine....

i don't think its a big issue, to me a sweet sixteen should be a backyard bbq or a small party at a house so doing it at a hall gives it a notch up.

Edited: I go to corp/college events where there is only cash bar or beer, soda is free and top shelf liq is to be paid by guests and no one ever says anything. So I never think it is tacky but I guess I am diff.

if you have it out i think its pretty tacky - i mean, you take it a step up by having it out & then ask ppl to pay for their drinks?! if its that big of a deal, have it in your backyard to save $$ that way!

No, absolutely not especially if it is a large family event...and the girl's friends are also invited.

Suggestions to cut cost:

*If anything just don't have top shelf, have the lowest grade beverage package...

*Or perhaps a wine and beer type thing...

May I ask why?

I went to a sweet 16 last night and there was a cash bar. We were talking about it at the party and I know thier thoughts so I wanted yours.

I hate cash bars. I'd be fine with just wine or beer available though!

Since it was a sweet 16 and there were going to be many people there under age, maybe they were thinking it might have reduced the chance of someone underage drinking.....

that's what i would think.

i don't think a sweet 16 needs to be a free for all of alcohol--so in this case i think a cash bar might be okay. i still wouldn't like it for myself--i despise cash bars. but for a sweet 16 i get it.

Ok that doesn't make sense to me. If it were me I would do beer and wine only, not cash, but ID for close-looking ppl. It certainly should not be a free-for-all with the 16-year-olds drinking. Of course it always depends on the guest list and what's expected in your family...

DH's cousin's sweet 16 was an open bar & i think as long as they ID - its fine. i mean, the bartenders arent stupid, they KNOW its a sweet 16 so you would think that they would be extra on top of everything!!

thats not cool if they werent IDing! but like i said, if they had it out, at least have beer wine & soda included!!

This is what I was thinking.
FYI- this wasn't a family member of mine this was a gf's sister

I don't see why there would need to be hard alcohol or alcohol at all at a sweet 16. Are there going to be adults?

They should at elast provide soda cus the kids might not have a bunch of cash on them. If there are adults beer and wine included would be nice. But again, its a sweet 16. Unless its like the ones on Mtv there probaby isn't a need for a full open bar!

My sister's Sweet 16 is in 2 weeks. She is having about 50 adult family members there. The price per plate is higher for them since there is open bar.

this is a good theory. After all, it's a KIDS party. if I bring Ella to a 1 or 2 years old's party, there's no booze. I think since the party is mostly kids, alcohol isn't really needed, except maybe for the parents of the 16 year old...?

I know at my sweet 16, we put all the adults at 1 table & they had a cocktail waitress just for them. I THINK my parents just ran a tab but I highly doubt they asked guests to pay.

Ditto, but I'm real on the border about having liquor at a kids party to begin with.

Many kids parties I've been to have alcohol- christenings, 1st birthdays in the park, house parties, etc.
