so one of my best friends from HS is moving back to long island after living all over the US (her husband was in the army) and she is moving in with her aunt, but her aunt wont let her bring her cats with her so i offered to watch one of her cats while she looks for an apt.
the cat is 8 years old, very fat & totally loveable. i'm just a little nervous that it will start to scratch things if it gets nervous b/c he's in a new home... i mean, my friend & her hubby moved A LOT b/c of relocating for the army - so i guess it shouldnt be bad, right?? she said that she has never had a problem with the cat scratching anything... the cat has a scratching post that he uses
if any cat owner can shed some light on this situation & give me some advice that would be greatly appreciated!!!!
TIA

Re: cat owners - i need advice!!
you can get some double sided tape and put it on your furniture to stop them from scratch. any pet store would have the 'pet friendly' kind--when they go to scratch their paw gets stuck and they won't be too happy about it.

no, i bought this and DH just put it on our couches... of course he only did the edges and my cat got wise and just moved over but it does seem to work.
i debated getting her declawed but i just couldn't do it... i'm hoping she'll grow out of it.

nope! petco has it--in the cat scratching stuff---sometimes they come in convenient lone & wide strips -- or just rolls of it that you can unroll and measure your self
i used it for the first few days my cat was at our apt....before he was gonna get declawed. (DH wanted it and wouldn't budge ) and it worked pretty well....our cat would put his paw on it and it would get stuck for a second and he would get all annoyed by it.

hooray!! i may just pick that up this weekend before the cat comes!!
i figured i'd hang around the house all day sunday with the cat (thats the first full day we'll have him) and see how he acts... i'm assuming i'll be able to tell then if he will go to scratch things....
praying that he DOESNT or DH will kill me!!!

Re: cat owners - i need advice!!
I would recommend for the first day or two, to have the cat be in a single room in your home so that it gets used to the sounds and smells around it. Even though it has moved around a fair amount, it will still need to adjust. We did this each time we had a new cat, and it worked perfectly. They still try to explore after you let them have access to the rest of the home, but they aren't so startled.

Re: cat owners - i need advice!!
ok my word of advise is this... Go buy this
$21.99 at Petco
My cat does not scratch a thing b/c of this lifesaver. I did however introduce her to this as a kitten but all in all I find that as long as the cat has something to go to than they can't be bothered with the furniture. The cat nip helps out tremendously in the is area too

You are too sweet! THat is a very nice gesture. I'm sure it will be fine since it never had a problem before.

Re: cat owners - i need advice!!
if you're really worried about him adjusting to a new home, they sell this plug in thing that releases some kind of stuff that relaxes the cat- I forgot the name of it, but they sell it in Petco....it kind of looks like a plug in air freshener- it's around $40 I think, but its supposed to be good for 90 days. I bought it when we moved so our 2 cats wouldn't be nervous in the new house.

you plug it in the room the cat would be in most of the time (i.e. living room).....I guess it worked pretty well since they didn't have any behavior issues (like not using the litter box).....as a tip, I saved a little bit since I bought it on ebay instead of Petco.
here's a link to a search on ebay, its called Feliway:
its up to you if you want to spend $$ on it, if this cat has already moved around alot, he might not be that finicky that he'd need it.
