celebrating birthdays

How do you celebrate birthdays with in laws - specifically yours.
Traditionally, in my family, we got together on or close to the actual birthday. Last year my MIL hosted mine and this year my sister is hosting, and wants to invite them. I'm not really sure how I feel

Re: celebrating birthdays

We dont spend birthdays with our parents so I dont have any personal experience but if Im reading your post correctly, it might seem like a snub if your MIL didnt get invited to your birthday celebration this year after hosting it for you last year.

Re: celebrating birthdays

My mother has always made dinner for myself and husband for each of our birthdays and would amke a cake, if it was the day beofer, day of or day after, it was alwyas our choice.

I was the one responsible for making sure DH even had a cake and a gift, for his birthday. His paretns would not even get him a cake sometimes. I used to have DH find out if they were doing anything for him, or if I needed to. Once we moved iontogether, I invited his paretns over for cake, only way they would even celebrate.

And for mine, nothing!!!

Last year I was over there on my B-day and they didn't even think to say Happy Birthday, and earlier in the day I haeard my DH tell them it was my birthday.

After I invited his family to my fail's house for cake, then his sister seems to be doing the same fore herrself and her boyfriend. And we jsut went to her house for her boyfriedn and guess what he got gifts form my inlaws. And we got him a gift.

We decided that if my b-day is not acknowledged this year, we are flipping out. I am sick of caring about everyone else's b-day and they don't care about mine.

I don't.

They are so not into these things.

I will get a card and a gift from them- which is very nice.

I usually spend my actual Birthday with my husband and I have a brunch with my family a few days later.

My birthday, mom's birthday and my parents anniversary is all on the same day....so we always just have family over for a cake to celebrate all three occations!!

Re: celebrating birthdays

My IL's live somewhere over the rainbow so they just call us on our birthdays. My father- NOTHING doesn't even mention it heaven forbid we forget his though. My Mom and stepDad take us out to dinner or make us dinner for our birthdays! My Mom also ALWAYS puts up the birthday banner- she loves that thing!

Personally I think it is great if you can have both families together!! I just wish I could even get MY Whole family together!

Re: celebrating birthdays

My Husbands Birthday is the 18th and mines the 22nd of this month so we pick a day inbetween and have dinner with both families. I do it at my house to be on neutral grounds : )

Re: celebrating birthdays

My mom always make a big deal for all of us... any kind of dinner (homemade by her!!) we want & whatever desert we want her to make us!! And even though her B-day & hubbys are the same day, frequently over the last 11 years, she has also made him a cake!!
His family typically does carvel ice cream cake, which he loves!! No dinner or anything.... but since getting married, we have made a point of taking his parents out for their Bdays and when my hubbys bday came I made him dinner & then had his parents come down for cake & invited my family over too..... I think he liked having a crowd around!!

Re: celebrating birthdays

My hubby and I have the same birthday (7 years apart) so the IL's just add my name to the cake
