changing my name

changing my name

Ah! I'm sooo confused! How did you all do this? We're still (impatiently) awaiting our Marriage Certificate to arrive in the mail, and i'm under the impression that I cannot do a thing until that gets here. Is that true?

I just assumed that I'll have to go to the DMV and that'll change my drivers license, but what about actually changing my NAME?? Including my Social Security card and all of that. I've heard of that Miss now Mrs website. Has anybody used that before?? I'm wondering how that works. It looks like it's all just done online, so do i even need the marriage certificate for that? I am sooo confused. And I'm getting really irritated with being married and STILL having to sign my maiden name to everything. Grrr.

So if ANYBODY can help me out with some advice, I'd really really appreciate it. I just have no idea where to begin with changing my name.

thanks you guys

You can do your credit cards online before you get the marriage cert. Also you can do things like your phone, cable, etc.

Then, when you get your marriage cert - go to these places in this order if you can:

1 - social security office. Go early in the am if you can, you'll have no wait and be out in 15 mins.

2 - DMV - again, go early so you have less of a wait.

3 - banks

And honestly that should be it! If you are not working now which I think you said you weren't - you don't have to do anything related to work or insurance which is good. all of the places above will just look at your marriage cert, possibly make a copy - but they do not need a certified copy.

It seems daunting but it's really not. The 3 places that need to see the marriage cert. don't take long at all!

It honestly wasn't that bad although Im still in the process of changing a few things but all the major forms of identification are changed. It'll be much easier if you have the forms already filled out. Try this thread, it has links to the forms you have to fill out:

Some places require the marriage certificate. Both of our banks did. If you have any airline frequent flier miles or hotel point cards, change those. All your CCs. All utilities. Just go on every website or call up to change it. Some will say they need a copy of the certificate.

So how does the Miss now Mrs website work?? You need your marriage certificate for that? I don't understand how it's done all online.

I love this thread..now that I am ome I have to get working on this.

I have a question. I live in Queens but our marriage certificate was mailed to our LI address, which is soon going to become my permanent address. DO I have to go to Queens where I currently live and is listed as my residnece everywhere or do I have to go in LI which will be my residence and the location where the certificate was sent?
