Changing your name at work

Changing your name at work

So I've been a little bit spastic with this whole name change thing. I changed all my legal stuff right away (SS card, drivers license, passports, all my payroll and health insurance stuff at work, credit cards, bank accounts, etc), but had originally decided to keep my maiden name at work for everyday dealings with people. I swore up and down that this was 'to keep people from being confused' but in reality I think I was just sad about letting go of my name and wanted to keep using it in a professional context.

WELL let's just say I was right - people are conFOOZED. Since all my paperwork with HR has my new name on it (it has to, for tax purposes and legality and shtuff), some things are floating around with one name, and some with another. People who see my new name used are like 'who the heck is that??'

So my question is, for those of you who changed your name everywhere, how did you inform people at work? Did you send out some kind of a mass email or just kind of let it ride? At this point even I'm getting confused and I'm thinking it might just be easier to change it over completely. Bleh!! Ok sorry that was a lot longer than it needed to be

I'm kinda the opposite of you right now. I AM planning on changing my name to DH's, but currently the ONLY things that I've changed are m name on my work email (and all I did was ADD Dh's last name after my maiden, so it says Yesenia Maiden Married) and my new health insurance card because I joined DH's health insurance and we had to send our marriage certificate etc. and they must have seen 'new last name' as my DH's name and they issued my card as Yesenia Marriedname.

That said, I thought the easiest way to transition at work was to tack on my married lastname after my maiden so people know who the heck it is. Then when I officially change everything with DMV, SS, credit cards, etc, I can just go by my married last name.

I changed my name everywhere else except work.. I feel like it's so confusing to everyone that I'll have to go by a new name, so I think I'm just going to go by my maiden name at work!

I changed my name with SS and DMV, then notified HR at work so that they can change my payroll, insurance and 401K stuff. I also changed my name in the computer system with MIS, mass e-mailed everyone using bcc that effective this date, my new e-mail address will be Susanne marriedname.
For a little while I just used both my maiden and married names.
Still need to change my passport, the banks, mortgage, insurances, and my credit cards.

I just sent out an email to my supervisor listing my old name: maiden name, Social Sceurity #, old address , phone numbers etc. I brielfy explained the reasons for the changes and then beneath it listed all my new info.

She took it and sent it in to HR and it was done really quick and painless and provides a paper trail-I am a weirdo. I like to get everything on paper.

Re: Changing your name at work

Thanks for the responses! The problem I am having is that my name change on the HR stuff (health insurance, W2, 401K, etc) is trickling down into the stuff I didn't want to change. Like the other day HR took it upon themselves to change my last name in the phone directory and now no one can find me so I had to fight to change it back. Also I travel a lot for work, so my plane tickets will have to be in my new name, which matches my passport, but does NOT match the name on the badge I have to use to pick them up...KWIM? That's why I'm thinking I might have to just change it altogether.

Yesi I did the same thing as you - just made my maiden name my middle name so it's Jennifer Oldname Newname - hopefully people will figure it out but there are bunch of dopes around here

I just let it as is and they left my old email and then change it to my married name so I technically have 2 emails but one inbox. And I just change my name plate but that about it. i didn't go all out to inform people.

keeping my maiden name at work is my ultimate guilty pleasure...

i've changed it every single place BUT my job. i mean, i changed it legally, but my 'preferred' name (for interal directory purposes, room, phone, etc) is my maiden name.

i think i lucked out cause my name, 'lupe', is the only one in this firm. if they see lupe MARRIED versus lupe MAIDEN they'll assume it's the same lupe

if i change jobs though, and i'll have to use my married last name, that's when it'll REALLY hit home. but for now....i'm still me! at work! where i practically live so yipee!

Lupe you took the words right out of my mouth. This is EXACTLY how I feel and why I really don't want to have to change it. I think I will try to keep things the way they are as long as I can.

Re: Changing your name at work

I'm doing the exact same thing. Changing everything legally but still using my maiden name while I'm with this office. I've seen sooo many others get married, change their names, and then *BAM*! Suddenly no one knows who they are anymore. It's SO dumb!

Could you have your systems person ghost a new email address for you that filters to your new one?
