Confusing thank you card wording
Ok, bear with me...this is long and complicated. Two of my parents' friends did not attend the wedding. The reason was because the wife was terminally ill. However, she was given three months, and it is now like...six months later. They sent a gift, and in the card she wrote that she was so sorry that she couldn't come, but she WAS very ill.
Thing is, the terminally ill part was supposed to be a secret. They really did not want anyone to know. Therefore, I don't even know if they knew that I knew.
Generally, I would write, 'I'm sorry that you weren't able to make, but I'm so glad that you're feeling better!'
However, if they do know that I knew that she was terminally ill...I don't know...that doesn't sound like enough. I don't want to sound like 'oh I'm so glad that you got over your cold!' when in fact, she has lived past when doctors told her she was 'supposed to.'
I'm just confused as to how to word the 'Sorry you weren't able to make it...' part without sounding cold towards her illness, but also without sounding like I knew if I wasn't supposed to know.
Obviously, I am just really confused.
Any suggestions?
