Silly questions... what kind of wine do you use when a receipe calls for a cup of red cooking wine or dry cooking wine...etc-?
Is it what ever kinds of wine you have that you would drink.. or is there some kind of brand?

Re: Cooking Wine?
I forget which chef it was but he/she made a very valid point. You cook with wine you would want to drink.
Merlot is a good cooking red wine.

Yup! I was just going to say that you should cook with the same wine that you'd drink

Re: Cooking Wine?
I used cooking red wine and white wine and they taste good in the dish. Its usually near the oil and vinegar section in the supermarket.
If you want to use regular wine here are some dry wines:
-Merlot -Pinot Noir -Cabernet Sauvignon -Shiraz

Your welcome! When you go to the liquor store ask them what brand they prefer, they are usually helpful.

Right, when my DH makes chicken marsala, he uses the Marsala wine from the supermarket. I can't remember the name of it right now. Otherwise, he usually uses whatever wine we have in the house.

Re: Cooking Wine?
I just usually open whatever we have on hand and use that and then drink the rest. The only cooking wine I own is marsala and I only use that if its called for specifically.

That's what I use also, the brand is Holland House. But my SIL told me she used Pindar white wine in a recipe and she loved the taste, so maybe 'real' wine is better? Also they add salt to the white wine sold in food stores if that makes a difference.

Re: Cooking Wine?
Cooking wine that you find in the supermarket has added salt to it. You wouldn't want to drink that straight from the bottle.
As the other posters said, use any drinking wine to cook with. Doesn't have to be an expensive one, but something that tastes decent.
I usually use Cabernet Sauvingon for red, and chardonney for white. Just read the description of the wine on the back label. It will tell you if the wine is fruity, or spicy, or has hints of various flavors. Use that information as a guideline for your recipe. If you are making a white sauce for fish, you wouldn't necessarily want a white wine that has hints of peach or vanilla. Some reds are fruity, while others are spicy and smoky.

Ok, gotcha! Thanks for posting this. I really have no knowledge about wine.
