Hi ladies i know its been a few weeks since ive been on.. heres whats been going on..
I got the call from the pediatric office that they wanted to hire me and that i would be able to start aug 11th. Well about 30 seconds later i got a call back from the office manager saying that she didnt want me to quit my job yet untill i worked a little in the office to make sure i liked it and that she wanted me to come in on monday.(july 28th) So thinkin she knows best and that she was just being nice i decided to go in on that monday. Well it turns out ive been working 25 hours a week since then and still at my old job 25 hours a week. and turns out I HATE THIS NEW JOB!!!!! im just starting the 2nd week and i techinaclly shouldnt even be working yet. im so disapointed in the pay and the enviorment im just not HAPPY.
so yesterday i went to my old job to finish what shoul dhave been my last week there and the boss who is much more like a friend says whats wrong... and we sat down in his office and i just let it all out. He then told me that i dont owe them anything. I havent been there long enough. and that if im not happy i should leave especially since im too young to have a job i hate.
So heres the issue... i happend to get a call from a nursing home that i was hoping would call a few weeks ago. so i took the interview (today at 230) if it seems good i would really like to take the job and give this a shot. I'm so uncomfortable with confrontation and am afraid that when i go back to the pediatric office thats what will happen when i tell them i quit. So heres my question. Im supposed to be in one of their other offices tomorrow from 9-1 i dont think the office manager is in tomorrow and id rather not put off telling them till friday when i have to work 9-2. Can i call them and tell them over the phone? i know its prob not appropriate but i just really dont know what to do ive never been in this perdiciment(spelling) before and could really use some guidance.. my husband is no help sometimes hes like just dont go back.
Thanks in advance!

Re: could really use some advice/guidance
That's really gross, but your current boss is right, you don't owe them anything. My advice would be to wait for a face to face with the office manager (Friday?) -- for a few reasons, really, its the more mature thing to do to begin with, Don't worry, I don't envision a screaming match or anything. Sure they'll be disappointed but I don't expect it will get ugly. Also, you know what they say about burning bridges; this early in your career its important to handle yourself well, you never know who you'll run into at another juncture down the road. So if you do your best in these tricky situations you can have NO REGRETS about how you conducted yourself. Lastly, you don't HAVE the nursing home gig yet, and they might not get back to you overnight, so you may want to keep doing what you're doing until you know for sure the other job is a done deal (i.e. you've received an offer IN WRITING).
What's another week? You can do ANYTHING for a week sweetie. Better to see how it all pans out before rushing to quit, I say...

always be professional & courteous...that is my rule..and ALWAYS give 2 weeks notice...sometimes they will let you off the hook early.
But you never want to be labeled as unreliable...which would be just not showing up....plus you never know who knows who out there in the world. I would just be honest & give the pediatrics place your notice...it sounds like they had you there on a somewhat trial basis anyway...HTH!

I agree with the others you should give the courtesy of a face to face worst thing that can happen if they get nasty or something you can always leave. I hate confrontation also so I know how you feel but I think it would be best for your career.

Re: could really use some advice/guidance
thanks so much girls i really appreciate it. I will wait to do face to face.. and im not worried about quitting before i get the new job b.c im still at my old part time job and they've offered me to stay as long as i need. which i cant thank them enough for.
See the reason i dont feel i need to give 2 weeks is because im in training... they have to pay someone everydayim there to train me(which hasnt been happening b/c the girl thats supposed to be training me told me to my face she doesnt want to train me. ) and im doing them a favor.

they will probably let you go earlier than 2 weeks but it is still proper protocol to give them that much notice.

Re: could really use some advice/guidance
As to notice, I'd say OFFER the two weeks, and let them decide whether to keep 'training' you (sounds like a waste, but its their call really). It seems they'd be foolish to keep training a departing employee, but I think its their decision; you can't go wrong by offering the STANDARD exit arrangement. Just phrase it casually like, 'I'm happy to give you the standard two weeks' notice, but obviously its understandable if you don't want to continue training me for the position.. '
It'll be fine, you're in great shape, don't worry!!!

Re: could really use some advice/guidance
OK, first I wanted to tell you that I am sorry about this little bump in the road but I really think everything is going to be ok! You definitely dont owe the new job anything but should resign in person...and I would suggest typing up a short letter of resignation. Maybe leave your last day as blank and ask them when your last day should be? Tell them you are more than willing to give 2 weeks if they think its necessary (but sounds doubtful that they will need you to stay that long).
I hate confrontation myself but its better to be professional and not burn bridges like others said. GOod luck and let us know what happens!

Re: could really use some advice/guidance
Also by the way things sounds...they must have a lot of turnover there and that is why they wanted you to 'try it out' first. So sounds like they may be used to people coming and going (not that its a good thing, but may ease your mind)

this is why I you!!! I agree with everyone- talk to them face to face on friday, but I do feel that since you are still training that you do not need to offer to stay any longer. If they ask you to then I guess it is the right thing to do- you have to make yourself happy- and if you are not happy then you are doing the right thing by changing the situation!

Re: could really use some advice/guidance
I hate to say it but you gotta buck up and tell them face to face Sometimes facing your fears (which yours is confrontation) will make you less afraid of it for the near future when it happens again , and it will. Trust me
I would offer the two weeks but honestly I would ask them if it is really necessary , and if it is not than you appreciate less time b/c your really exhausted doing both jobs.
I also agree with all the ladies that posted, don't burn the bridge you never know down the road if these people will be influencing another situation your in being the field is something your sticking with.
You will feel like a weight has been lifted once you approach this 'new' office management and tell them this job is just not right for you. I would be very diplomatic but professional and try not to over talk. Now that I don't feel is necessary but the advance notice is that you will not be taking their job.\

Re: could really use some advice/guidance
UPDATE!!!
OH MY GOD GILRS.... i dont even know where to begin! I went on the interview it was AWESOME they offered me the job and offered me 7 dollars an hour more then the pediatric office plus 10% extra per hour for night differential.. i took the job on the spot and start 8-18
i spoke to a few of my professional friends to see how to approach the quitting of the pediatric office and they all said CALL RIGHT AWAY... soi took their and your advice to call.. heres how it went..
IT WAS A DISASTAR!!!!! SO MUCH CONFRONTATION IT WAS TERIBLE AND ONE OF THE WORST EXPERIENCES IN MY LIFE!!!!!!!!
i was YELLED AT like a 2 year old by the manager who said I WANT A GOOD EXPLINATION TO WHY YOU LIED TO ME...(b.c during the week i had told her things were going ok) When i started the convo with.. THank you so much for this opportunity but its just not working out for me. its not what i was expecting and that i was sorry to do this so soon but would rahter let her know now then later. she proceeded to tell me how i was being unprofessional and that i need to finish the week since i had fowled up their schedule (when i had already offered to at least finish the week) and then proceeded to ask me 3more times why i was leaving when i clearly told her IT JUST WASNT WORKING OUT PERSONALLY. she yelled then hung up.. i started to cry.. 5 min later the other manager called me to AGAIN ASK ME WHY I WAS LEAVING? and i said with all due respect i already spoke with the other woman and that i dont feel i need to explain myself again. Thank you for the opportunity she then asked me 3 more times...((( HELLO IS ANYONE LISTENING TO ME!!))) then she asked if it was something they did.. i said no this was a personal reason and that the way i was just spoken to by the head manager just made me realize that my decision was correct. i then got a 3rd call to tell me that i should not come back and that i would get a check in the mail...
I CANT BELIEVE IT!!!! i've never got a better sign that i had made the right decision!!!
just thought id update you... thanks for everything girls!

Re: could really use some advice/guidance UPDATE!
wow!!!! reading your update, I would DEFINITELY say you made the right choice, they sound a little nutso, maybe they've had quite a few people not make it through training due to their crazy work atmosphere. I had a somewhat similar experience about 7 yrs ago, I was in between jobs and tried a company that was outside of my field- within 2 weeks I knew it wasn't for me, I left and found a job that really jumpstarted my career and skillset. congrats on landing the new job, it sounds like a win-win situation!!

Re: could really use some advice/guidance UPDATE!
Just read your update and WOWZERS! What nasty people!! If I were you, after you get your last check from them, I'd find out who the head head person is (if its a doctor or a medical group that is in charge of the practice or whatever) and write a letter and SPELL OUT what happened to you and how unprofessional the office manager was.
That is absolutely outrageous and it's no wonder they have a high turnover rate. I would also put in there that the person that was supposed to train you told you that she didn't want to train you, which leads to a hostile work environment and is on a path to workplace harassment.
Stick it to them so that no one else gets stuck in this kind of situation!
I'm so glad you got the other job. Sounds wonderful and I hope it all works out for you!

thank you so much for your response i would love to do that but to be honest i dont want to stoop to their level.. i feel this is the exact reason they have a high turn over and they were trying to find out but by bullying the leaving empolyee doesnt help!
