If you already own a house, or are looking, did you and DH always agree on where you wanted to live?? Did you have to compromise?
DH in the beginning kept telling me he didn't care where I looked for a house. Then after the wedding when I told him I would like to move somewhere around Bethpage, he freaked out on me and told me that he would have a longer commute to work. WAHHHHHHH *insert crying baby face here*
How would you or did you come up with an answer to this??
I Don't want to live in Queens my entire life, I would like a yard and a chance to actually park somewhat near my house when I want to lol

this is exactly why i might end up leaving queens. i mean we could have a 4 br 2 bath house in LI for the price of a 2 br co-op in forest hills. it's not fair. but hopefully we will have enough money saved when the time comes to keep our options open - I know i want to look in forest hills, port washington and Rockville Centre. I would look in Bayside too though i lived there for 2 years; i still like the area.
I love Bayside...I work there (and live right near by) its a great area and I think you can get something for less $$ then forest hills at least

Taxes on LI are very high and that's something you have to pay EVERY year and it goes up every year. You have to factor that in. My mom has a 3 family house in Queens and she pays $1500 per year for taxes. My MIL pays over $8K per year for her house in Nassau county and she has a tiny peice of lot.

Well, I grew up in Holtsville and DH grew up in Coram. We're currently renting in Farmingville. We're looking at houses for sale in Holbrook, Holtsville, Farmingville, Selden, Centereach and Medford.
House hunting is so stressful.

It's hard though bc in Queens, at least the neighborhoods we like, houses are VERY expensive. I mean for Astoria, $600k is beginning prices for homes and thats with a lot of fixing up to the house, you don't get much for $600k. To get a decent and not even something that big or great, you have to pay $700-800k for a 2-3 bedroom home and doesn't even mean you get a backyard with that money. In forest hills can be even worse in some parts. This one area I like, most of the homes are in the millions.
You can get quite a nice house for 600k in suffolk county.

That's exactly why DH and I decided to stay in Queens. The mortgage will never change but taxes will. So we decided paying more for the house and having the low taxes was the best decision for us.

If we were to move to LI, i would prefer to move to Nassau. Our parents live in Queens and when we have kids they'll be watching them. Will be harder to drive back and forth to queens from suffolk all the time with kids. Plus its too quiet for me, nothing wrong with that bc i know others love it but for example, i love having a supermarket that is within walking distance and other places i can run to at any time and not have to drive a bit just to get to. Like now if im in the middle of cooking and forgot something, i just run down the block and im back in just minutes.
Also, its funny bc when we go to DH's house in the poconos, i get so scared when we go to the house at night. I know theres probably less to worry about but freaks me out if i had to come home alone at night and its all dark and nothing around.
But most importantly, if we're gonna have our parents watch the kids instead of doing daycare, i don't want to be far.

I know exactly what you mean. I used to live Manhattan, then Queens and it took me 3 years to get use to living in Suffolk county. I've been on LI for 7 years now. This is the place for DH and I. I'm sure you and your DH will find the perfect place to settle. Don't worry.

Very true! But 1500 is great...but low...my parents pay about $4000 (I know a lot less than Nassau) but that is bc if you have any extensions or whatever in Queens the taxes go up to Nassau prices. Also you have city taxes taken out of your check which you dont if you live in Nassau . But I agree the taxes in Nassau are much more.

Re: Deciding on where to live
I would love to live back in my hometown, Commack.. I mean I am there all the time anyway lol..
But when we buy our next house (we live in our condo now) we want to live in the middle of the island. this way we are half way point from my in laws and my parents.. So my in laws can watch the kids and my parents can watch the dog lol hehehehehehe...My mom and mother in law have already agreed to this and actually decided this on there own lol...

Re: Deciding on where to live
Well see with you comment about Queens, I can't completely agree with you. I grew up in Queens and lived in an area where my friends had backyards and could park on the street with no problem. I could park on the street no problem when I lived at home. It really depends where in Queens you want to live to have these options though. DH is originally from Queens also and where he lived people didn't have a problem with parking either. He did move to LI about ten years ago, but that didn't really have an affect on where we were living. We ended up in the town he works in which is convenient for both of us right now. It's just about a half hour train ride for me into Penn Station and 5 mins for him (he has to be at work to start 6:30am).
There really wasn't a compromise with us. We both wanted LI for better public schools and our proximity to our jobs and our families. We had no desire to live In Queens so where we ended up was perfect for us.

Denise, you hit the nail right on the head. I am a Queens girl and will never let it die. The one thing I hate more than anything living in Nassau (and we're like the first town in Nassau from Queens) is having to drive EVERYWHERE! There is no such thing as supermarket down the street or pizza place right there. It suckks royally and I tell my family and DH this all the time. How I would love to live in our neighborhood now, but with the amenities we had in Queens. We'll be in our house a year next month and I still about stuff!

i am sure with time you'll get used to it. Some places in LI, you can still have that depends where. I remember a few weeks ago DH and I went to visit his dad in the hospital, i told him to stop at a store first so i can get something to drink and needed cigs, OMG we drove like 15-20 mins until we found something, it was crazy. I just thought 'what if late at night you just needed to run to the store quickly' but for those who grew up with that to them its not a big deal so it's just about what youre used to and what you grew up with.
When I lived in Astoria it was even easier bc i lived right off of Ditmars boulevard so all these restaurants I go to were all walking distance, train station and everything you need. I like living on a quiet block but within walking distance having everything by you.
I like LI don't get me wrong, im just not ready for the very suburban life. I think about dh and i like going to the city a lot and the time it would take us to get there. But in Queens, unless you can spend 1million and higher you dont get the whole big back yard, bigger house more for your money part which is a nice plus when you have kids. THere are parts of Queens that are a lot less but either i wouldn't live there or commute is horrible from there. If i could stay in queens it would be in any of these neighborhoods :Astoria, LIC, Forest hills, Kew Gardens, bayside, whitestone, im probably forgetting some.

Re: Deciding on where to live
We used to live in long beach, but we both hated the commute, So DH really wanted to be closer to the office, and since i work there too, it made sense. We ended up getting a house that is 1 mile from the office.

Re: Deciding on where to live
Currently, we live in an apartment. We talk about houses all the time and neighborhoods we like. I am set on having a town with a quaint village- Northport, Smithtown, even Oyster Bay.
Then, we toyed the idea of moving to Wilmington, NC. That's the 'Dawson's Creek' town. It's beautiful there.

Re: Deciding on where to live
I was reading the posts about Queens. Where I grew up in Queens (South Richmond Hill) parking wasn't a problem until it got overcrowded, now there is hardly parking around. Where we are in Queens (Forest Hills) now parking is an issue. Dh is a teachers so his hours allow him to more easily find parking there than people who get home at like 7pm. Some places in Queens have ample parking and others just don't. It's just nice to have a garage or parking spot anywhere you go in Queens.
Honestly we plan to be permanently on LI and in Suffolk county because of the better school districts, larger plots of land and more of a support system when we have children. Also it's not as quiet as it was years ago. It always amazes me the amount of traffic, stores, etc there are, even out by where we are in Farmingville. Nassau County to me is almost the same as living in Queens, the plots aren't as big and the taxes are muh higher so Suffolk it will be for us. I just don't see the value to Nassau when it comes to LI living (sorry Nassau ladies).
I'm hoping at some point my parents move out to Suffolk from Queens so I can look after them with more ease, but if not we'll just have to make the trip into Queens. Either way I want my kids to come out to the city and to Queens regularly so they're exposed to every aspect of NY living.

Re: Deciding on where to live
I basically left it up to Dh. He has the commute...I am finishing up school and I can work anywhere. I originally wanted him to live closer to his job. Dh decided that he did not like many of the areas near his job and would rather live closer to our parents/friends/family. So we looked on the north shore in Sufflk county...love it, but it added another 20 minutes onto his commute, just getting to the LIE. So then we decided to look closer to the LIE and that is where we ended up looking for over a year. So it took some time to figure out the location.

I live in holtsville..so we can all be neighbors!!!!!!!!!!! but to answer your question..no we didn't really discuss where we wanted to live. We wanted to be fairly close to our jobs and family, and we wanted to live in suffolk since its much cheaper
We're in Patchogue too-living in my in-laws basement but hoping to buy in Patchogue or around here because of the prices too. I commute to Queens and while moving to Nassau would be ideal for my commute, I am really against moving that far. My reasoning is that we're looking to buy a house in a year or two and then a child soon after that. His dad and my parents live in Patchogue and his mom lives in Huntington. Until my kids are a little older, the farthest I would go is western suffolk. It's funny because DH would like to move to the city but I am totally against that-I like working there but I don't want to live there. It's also that I know I want to come back here when we have kids so I don't want to lose our friends here/make new friends there. Dh works in Commack and his commute is about a half hour and he wants to move further west so our commutes are more similar haha.
