Deciding on where to live

Deciding on where to live

If you already own a house, or are looking, did you and DH always agree on where you wanted to live?? Did you have to compromise?

DH in the beginning kept telling me he didn't care where I looked for a house. Then after the wedding when I told him I would like to move somewhere around Bethpage, he freaked out on me and told me that he would have a longer commute to work. WAHHHHHHH *insert crying baby face here*

How would you or did you come up with an answer to this??

I Don't want to live in Queens my entire life, I would like a yard and a chance to actually park somewhat near my house when I want to lol

I live in holtsville..so we can all be neighbors!!!!!!!!!!!
but to answer your question..no we didn't really discuss where we wanted to live. We wanted to be fairly close to our jobs and family, and we wanted to live in suffolk since its much cheaper

I agree, moving out on the island would be so much better and cheaper. Plus I am seeing some great deals on houses right now out there.
I think I would put up with a 2 hour commute if it meant getting a house. I need to find a way to pursuade him to move out into 'lawn guy land' lol

Re: Deciding on where to live

Since we cannot afford NYC, DH suggested we move to westchester, and I refused. So we agreed to look around Nassau county. Our family lives in NYC and I dont want to be too far. I think about the commute too since I work in Queens, but the fact that I am driving to my own house is so worth it to me.

we bought a house in east meadow. i will say, it was not my top choice. we were also considering plainview (taxes killed us though), massapequa, mass park (too long of a commute and too far from family), wantagh, bellmore, merrick. east meadow was my least favorite, but now that we're here, i'm really happy. it's close to everything, my BIL lives 2 minutes away, we're 15 min away from my ILs. it's great for us, and our commute is only about 10 min more each way. but yes, we (ok, i) compromised, and i'm glad i did

Re: Deciding on where to live

Even though I live Queens, we are totally moving out to Farmingville permanently once my place in Queens sell. Honestly even though I grew up in Queens I can't see raising children there and it's nice to have a big back yard,

After my place sells we want to pay-down his exisisting mortgage and buy another house (his house is where his mom lives). We're staying out in Suffolk county because if we do have children and I keep working in the city we need family support and his family is a lot larger and younger than my family so we would have it out there. So yes my commute will always be bad and his won'nt be a piece of cake either because he works in Baldwin, but we'll have family support.

In the future we're going to look at Centereach, Lake Grove, Sayville, Holbrook, Holtsville. For now we're in Farmingville at least 3 days a week so we're kinda your neighbor

SIL lives in Centereach...nice place .

Sara,...move out east...tell your DH if I can commute so can he

Re: Deciding on where to live

our situation is more complicated because we're deciding on which STATE to move to. I'm a complete New Yorker - born & raised. He's a country boy (grew up in Colorado & Arizona). So there's an obvious difference in our ideas of 'home'. Right now we're in Co just because he's got obligations here, but by next Christmas we want to be closer to home. I would like to be back in NY (on the Island, close to Coram). But DH wants to be somewhere a little more affordable and country-like (like Pennsylvania). So we're still working on figuring that out. My compromise is that i'll go anywhere he feels fit, as long as it's no more than a 4 hour drive from home (LI).

hope it works out

Re: Deciding on where to live

i had already bought my apt, so DH moved in with me (in Queens). He commutes to LI and I commute to midtown, so it works. BUT I've been getting the house itch and as much as i would love to stay near where i live now, you just get more for your money out in LI. I refuse to go as far out as suffolk b/c i'll have the longer commute and my whole fam is in nassau.

so when we are ready we'll have to choose and see if we can afford to buy a house in forest hills or if we're going to end up in like Rockville Centre or somewhere near there. we have at least 2 more years though.

Re: Deciding on where to live

This is such a tough decision. For me and DH it made sense for us to move to my home town. Although were both from Queens he is 45 minutes away in Belle Harbor, Im from Whitestone.

We bought a 2 bdrm coop and love it. We both would like to get a house here in a few yrs but unsure as to whether we will be able to afford it here...Whitestone is just soooo expensive. DH is really anti LI. So we are going to have major problems i na few yrs

When we have kids I think the big picture will be different and we will want and need a nice house and yard for them and cave and move out to li...

Re: Deciding on where to live

It's funny bc dh wanted to move to LI, and i was willing to do it but i really wanted to stay in Queens for now at least. Then we saw a place not long ago in LI, and on the way home dh said ' i dont want to move to LI anymore' he realized he wants to stay in Queens. Drives me crazy bc of the back and forth lol and also bc when i said something about staying in Queens he called me a baby lol

It's hard though bc in Queens, at least the neighborhoods we like, houses are VERY expensive. I mean for Astoria, $600k is beginning prices for homes and thats with a lot of fixing up to the house, you don't get much for $600k. To get a decent and not even something that big or great, you have to pay $700-800k for a 2-3 bedroom home and doesn't even mean you get a backyard with that money. In forest hills can be even worse in some parts. This one area I like, most of the homes are in the millions.

I know EXACTLY what you mean It's like that in Whitestone...my brother and SIL are looking at houses in Forest Hills and the prices are even more insane...but I love that area...the gardens? OMG gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!

whitestone is VERY expensive too, at least if you want a decent house. I won't even get into Malba prices lol. Yeah i was looking online and saw all these nice houses in forest hills and they were in the $4-8 million dollar range People who bought homes 20-30 years ago or even less are making an insane profit. I know dh's house, his parents paid about $60k when they bought it 30 years ago, now most of the houses on his block are worth $800-900k

MALBA? Oh forget it I am not even talking about Malba...my parents are in Beechurst, they paid $75 for their house in 1980..it is $1 mill now and believe me it is not a manison..just a decent house...but on a double lot so you know in queens that means $$.

Ughhhh When we were looking fully attached 2 bdrooms with tiny yards were $500 plus..thats why we went with a coop.....I dont see how we will ever afford a nice detached in Whitestone....but Im hoping somehow we will lol

Astoria is soooo expensive...but it is a great area to live!

Its crazy what you can get elsewhere for $1 million and here barely get anything.

Sometimes its worth it to get a house that needs some fixing up and fix it up. Well it's good if you know people who can do this and help you out or if you are handy yourself. I think it might be the way to go.

Yeah it's insane how expensive Astoria got. i mean regular 2 bedroom homes that are not even that big, no back yard and doesn't even have to be all fixed up can cost you $700-800k. I mean even if somebody has the money for that, why pay that much for that type of house when you can go elsewhere and get a lot more for your money.

this is exactly why i might end up leaving queens. i mean we could have a 4 br 2 bath house in LI for the price of a 2 br co-op in forest hills. it's not fair. but hopefully we will have enough money saved when the time comes to keep our options open - I know i want to look in forest hills, port washington and Rockville Centre. I would look in Bayside too though i lived there for 2 years; i still like the area.

Have you considered renting a house on LI first to see if you like it before you buy a house here?
