Detination Weddings and Gifts

OK - I am looking to you girls to settle a discussion my DH and I are having.

We are going to a wedding in two weeks in VT. The couple in quesiton gave us a very genorous gift for our wedding. My DH believes that we should give them the same amoung MINUS the cost of us attending their wedding (e.g., hotel, transportation, etc.).

What do you do when you go to a destination wedding? Do you give the same gift as if the wedding were local?

I have almost reciprocated what people gave us when they attended our wedding.

For the most part we give the same gift regardless of where it is.

The only time I did not give as much as I would have liked was for my cousins wedding in California. It was 3 months before our wedding coupled with +$1000 in travel expenses made it impossible to give as much as I would have liked. It was still a nice gift and was lowered more because of our wedding, not because of the location of the wedding.

if we took out our travel expenses, the bride and groom would be paying us to attend

I give the same amount no matter where I have to go; even when I went to a wedding in Bermuda.

Ask your DH this - if what they gave you for your wedding was less than your travel costs, would you give them a bill for the difference
