DH has class on our 1st anniversary

DH has class on our 1st anniversary

DH is working on his MBA part time at NYU and he has class on our first anniversary. He won't get home until after 11PM. I have tried to ask him to take off for that night, but he thinks we should go out the day before. I feel that it is out FIRST anniversary and we only have one FIRST and he should go to class and leave early because he is sick or something.

He also has class on my birthday a week later!!!

I am really frustrated about this and don't know how to handle it. I don't want him to be resentful of me because I suggest he skip/leave early from class.

Any opinions?

can he take off work and you celebrate with an anniversary day together - then he can go to class later?

I feel the same way as you do; a first anniversary only happens once, and it's a pretty special thing. WAY more important than class. Maybe your DH can tell his professor the situation and leave class early?

Having done grad school at night, I can sort of see why he is hesitant to miss it. If it is a once a week class, even leaving early can cause you to miss a lot of material and in my case, it could have had a huge effect on my later performance in the course.

I like the idea of him taking off the day from work, maybe you could have an early dinner in the city and then he could go to class. Would he do that?

He has talked about taking off of work, but the problem is that I am unemployed but looking for work and I would hate to start a job and then take a day off so soon into it.

I had actually hoped that we could have dinner at Westbury Manor.

sorry, but IMO this sounds a bit selfish and not very supportive. Having gone through a lot of school, you cannot just 'take off' because there is something else you want to do. Your classes and your job are your responsibilities at this time. Just celebrate the night before or after. The important thing is that you are together. It is the whole year that matters, not just one night.

I have actually been really super-supportive during this past year when DH and I have had opposite schedules (his class on Tues/Thurday my night teaching job on Mon/Wed). I have been the one to make sure that we spend time together at some point no matter what.

I guess if DH hadn't taken off random days of his past semesters for just being 'tired' I would understand the importance of these classes but in both of the past semesters he has missed a class or two because he chose to.

I can understand your frustration since he has taken off for less important things, have you brought this up to him?

I am in a part-time grad program as well, and wouldn't take off for my anniversary. That said, I also don't take off for being tired. I agree with him about not skipping, but agree with you that it is annoying when he skips for other, less important reasons.

DH had to work on our first anniversary....he had the next day off and we spent it looking at houses to buy.
