I didn't notice any drama on the post I made about speaking spanish. Obviously someone reported it b/c it was pulled? Or did I miss something?

I think it is weird how Puerto Rico is part of America yet all the signs are in Spanish. We had to learn how to read the street signs when we were there. We were not sure what way we were going when we were going Oste or Este. Ask a cop for direction and he doesn't understand you. I can understand though when someone speaks a different language in front of you with someone that might not understand English or understands the other language better, like one of my girlfriend and her mom talk Greek in front of me. I am lost but I know they can converse better that way.

It was mainly about how it is rude to speak another language around people who do not understand, or those who refuse to learn english, or pretend they don't know it, when they move here.
lol. my SIL's husband is Mexican & does this. He never wants to be apart of the family functions and when he's forced to, he won't talk to anyone. He actually has the nerve to PRETEND that he doesn't know English when in fact he DOES. Jerk! He apparently may be getting deported now tho. Oh well. I can't even stick up for him and say that he's a good American Citizen. Umm, no he's not. He won't even speak our language at all. Whatever. Go back to Mexico then.
oops - is this gonna get pulled now? Oh well
Let us know when he is deported haha. I hate when people pretend not to know English and they do. That to me is worse than not knowing the language at all. That's just complete arrogance to me.

I didn't see the post, but I will respond: I hate it when you are talking to two people who know another language, it could be spanish, french, german, italian, etc... then they break off the conversation with you to talk to each other in another language. I think that is just rude and uncalled for. I've had people do that to me in so many different languages, including Italian, Russian, Spanish, Chinese's (I don't which kind,) Yiddish, even the twin language. Its rude regardless of what language it is.

I definitely agree it's rude to speak another language (no matter which one) in a crowd of people who don't understand. On another note, I think Americans are intolerant of other languages besides English. I've lived abroad and I never heard of these complaints abroad. That's because people in other countries learn a lot of different languages besides the 'native' language.

Just to make something clear, It wasn't really bashing anyone who is hispanic. IT was mostly about the people who speak in a different language, (MOSTLY spanish b/c that's what most 'americans' speak these days) , it is annoying. And If anyone of us where to go to another country and not speak their language they would feel the same way.
I went to France a few years ago, and I have never spoken french before in my life, and I took out books on trying to learn french just so I could make my way around. Why no one else does this when they come to this country amazes me.
That's france, not every country is like that. I went to France and they didn't have a problem with me not speaking French. They were never rude to me.

I don't think it's fair to judge someone for not learning English. Regardless of how many years they've lived in the US.
