do you agree w/ this statement about wedding rings?

Original post by ssdbk

It seems like 10 years ago, most people got plain gold wedding bands, maybe with a few stones, maybe plain. But now it seems like everyone wants an eternity band as soon as they get married----or they want something with diamonds in it. I don't know if it's the whole bling obsession. Lots of people used to get plain metal bands. Now not so many. And if they do, they get the plain one as an extra.

I'm not evne talking about the fact that more people buy platinum now, I'm just wondering if anyone sees the change as far as people wanting diamonds all over themselves!!!

My wedding band is a small, dainty pave eternity band.

Yup yup, I agree, but I didn't abide by it, nor do I actually have any friends who did either (at least not to my recollection).

Believe it or not, both of our moms (me and DH) never received e-rings from our dads. My dad surprised my mom with her 'e-ring' a week before my wedding, and then DH's dad did the same for Christmas. However, my mom did get a half-eternity 'anniversary' band for, I think their 20th. My wedding ring is a half eternity band, but it alternates diamonds and sapphires. If I could have had my druthers I would have a sapphire e-ring as well.

While I do think the sparkles are pretty, for me a true eternity band isn't really my 'thing.' I kinda like being different.

I don't know about that..for my case, it was almost 10 years since we were together when we got married so I wanted my '10 year' band' at that time. Glad I did, because I would never get it now.

I agree, things have gotten a lot more 'bling' in the past few years.

A lot of the women I know in their late 30's & up have plain gold bands w/ Tiffany style solitaire e-rings. I know a bunch who have gotten their eternity bands and only wear that or have gotten their gold bands dipped in platinum or re-set altogether in platinum.
My cousin had hers reset in platinum & had a family ring w/ 7 small diamonds fit for her finger to act as a wedding band.

Mine is deff. the flashiest and I never would have thought I would go for something like I did. I never had a diamond until my DH came along and now I cant get enough!!

I think it's just about what's trendy at the time. Both my grandmothers got married in the 50's and both had diamond bands, one of them with alternating bagettes and round stones, the other with two rows of round stones. Also if you look at a lot of art deco bands they had a lot of stones in them.

My DH thinks that there is nothing wrong with keeping up with the times and changing your setting every 15 years or so. Right now I cannot imagine wanting to do that. My setting was a big deal to get (Ritani Endless Love) and I can't imagine taking my stone out at this point. But you never know.

My wedding ring is channel set with diamonds....not all around but halfway (2 rows) but at the same time I do agree with you.....

i agree but im guilty
i wanted some diamonds in my band and we got a great price on it because it was made by a friend of ours

my ring is solitaire and the diamonds in my band really sparkle and compliment my ring

i dont think there is anything wrong with getting the wedding band of your dreams - as long as it is in the budget

I think in NY especially you see a lot of bigger center stones and flashy wedding bands. We have offices all over the US and the ladies in other states have much more simple rings.

My mother's wedding band from 1960 has diamonds and my sister, who was married 16 years ago, has plenty of bling too.

I think a lot of ladies change their settings to match the trends, and I'm sure I will too, but I would never change the diamonds.

Mine doesn't either- but my setting is classic- but I wouldn't object to more/bigger diamonds later on

I would rather keep my wedding ring- which would be hard to top- unless I got another 'aniversay' band

Oh, I'm not saying there;s anything wrong with it at all! Your rings look great. I just had to have a certain e-ring setting with pave stones all around. I'm kinda guilty, too!

i agree. My mother has major issues with mine and my sisters ring - they are twice the size of hers. Many older women are 'upgrading' these days, which i think is great if you have the money and have made it through 20 years or so of marriage!!

I think it is a Northeast thing as well. I have a 1.2 carat diamond (family heirloom given to us) that i was overwhelmed by, i never expected or wanted something that big. I love it, but it took me ages to get used to how 'flashy' it seemes on me (I own all cheap silver and costume jewelry - I had never worn anything so fancy in my life!)

In NY, it was comprable (even smaller) than many womens. Now that i am in the south, I get the most extreme reactions to my ring. People will literally grab my hand and go 'oh my GOD! What does your husband DO?!' It mkes both DH and I a bit uncomfortable sometimes (becasue we are *** poor!) and really makes me realize how excesive the northeast can be. Don't get me wrong, there are rich southern ladies down here showing off some bling, but they are RICH, and you can tell. Up north, you have ALL types of people wearing big rings - its almost like it MUST be big these days.

I agree and I am guilty of the bling

ETA I blame some of the extra bling (well not blame b/c I love it) on my SIL she is a jeweler and I have really nice diamonds that are very sparkly so people tend to grab my hand and take notice

I agree, but what girl doesn't love diamonds?

I have an eternity band, my engagement ring is simple (solitare setting). I wanted an eternity wedding band being my enagement ring is plain (which I LOVE) and I think they look great together.

My mother doesn't even have an engagement ring. Just a solid yellow gold band!

I have an engagement ring (solitare) and a plain white gold band without diamonds. I'd like a band with bling but I'm waiting for that as a 'I gove you babies now cough up the bling' present.

I guess I'm more traditional then I thought!
