Do you ever talk politics with ILs?

Do you ever talk politics with ILs?

I knoooooooow it's just asking for trouble and usually I keep my mouth shut but this was the discussion for about 2 hours last night and after a glass of wine I couldn't sit it out. I was respectful but definitely participated

Luckily DH was on my side for this election but neither one of us agree with anything his parents had to say at all, and it also hurts their credibility when they dont even know the correct names of the candidates

I know it's a no-way topic, but with the election looming have any of you discussed politics with ILs?

No way!! We don't see eye to eye on politics, so I tend to keep my mouth shut. I only say something when I feel its a personal attack, but thats rare.

I have, but the good thing is that his mom wanted the same candidate as me so we were both against Dh with this one haha.

The worst though is that one time IL's came over my house for dinner, and a family friend came over too and he seriously has to argue politics with everybody. He is one of those far out ppl and thinks everything is a conspiracy theory. He was arguing with FIL so much, i was so worried. But FIL kept his cool and handled it well.

Actually, we have politics discussion with DH's parents all the time. His mom thinks like we do politically, his dad doesn't-he's a card-carrying republican, but nonetheless we all still have intelligent eye-opening discussions. MY father, on the other hand, is as conservative as it gets and follows his beliefs blindly so he literally cannot see how we can think any other way. He makes comments here and there but I refuse to take the bait because he cannot have a rational discussion so I just ignore his comments and we don't talk politics at all.

We're all in agreement, so it's a safe topic.

If it comes up I just listen and nod my head. Some things agree with, some I don't. They always vote one way I think. I don't know if they do research or not. So I just dont get into it. LOL.

Actually, we agree politically so its safe to talk about.

My parents on the other hand - I don't agree with their political views and thats fine except they just believe everything that they hear on the news. I was trying to explain the news bias to my mom, and you would think that she would understand since the head of her country OWNS the TV stations BUT she doesnt get it and I give up. She can't vote anyway LOL

Yes but my FIL is a die hard Republican and I'm undecided... so it gets no where. It is my FIL fav topic though so it always comes up

We ahve had discussions with MIL about politics but they never get heated, thank god. FIL isnt really too involved in politics so he usually doesn't get fired up when we are talking about it.

I avoid it like the plague!!!!!!!!!! his mom is very conservative, so I don't agree w/ alot of her views......I keep my mouth shut as much as possible.....DH on the other hand, he says WHATEVER he wants to her (which of course he can get away with....and hey better him than me!!!)......they might argue about it a little bit, but DH is good at debating so I think he gets off on it.....if it was me saying what he says she'd probably feel like she has to save my soul or something

nope. (we don't live close enough to see eachother often to talk face to face so we just chat by phone sometimes but dont get into politics really). DH's dad is a 'conservative democrat.' I respect that he's a union man, has been a union rep for over 15 yrs and is a strong leader in the democratic party in Alaska. On the other hand, I'm a conservative republican in a fam of conservative republicans. Its not like its a no-no topic or something, we just dont get an opportunity to talk about it all together, so yea..im not sure how it'd go. but prob just fine.

My IL's and I know we're on the opposite sides of the political aisle (as are me and DH). I don't mind debating with DH, but I try not to bring it up with my IL's.

Back in 2004, way before we were engaged and the IL's were just starting to get to know me, my MIL happened to ask who I was voting for and when she heard my answer wasn't George Bush, I swear she looked like she was going to lunge across the table and choke me. She being very religious, then proceeded to say things to make me feel un-Christian for being a Democrat. Now she's entitled to her political views, and I certainly have nothing against Republicans being that I married one, but it really gets to me when she tries to inject religion into it.

Next time she tries that I'm going to tell her 'Being a Republican doesn't make you holy, and being a Democrat doesn't make me the anti-Christ.'

small talk at times is difficult...so politics is out of the question

she's a wonderful woman, but girl you know the deal if you know you can't be right, you just don't say ANYTHING that's lesson #1 in getting along with inlaws! I save all my opinionated thoughts for DH when we get home!!

Re: Do you ever talk politics with ILs?

We talk about them a lot...BUT only because we agree on many issues, belong to the same party and are voting the same way. So it's like agreeing and discussing what you want for dinner or something...otherwise it'd be off the table...I'd be scared of a fight.
You know it's funny because I've dated men who have the oppostie political views of me (which resulted in fights sometimes) and I started thinking that how people think and what their values are (political or otherwise), etc is really the way they view the world. I started looking for a guy who had the same political beliefs as me. I don't think people have to be married to someone who has the same political views as they do, but for me it's just another thing we share and have in common rather than something that could divide us.

I can't stand when people pull that holier-than-thou stuff!!!!! Just because you have different political views does not make you a better person...it just means you have differing political views!

Re: Do you ever talk politics with ILs?

My FIL would vote for ANY republican candidate and defend ANYONE they put up there to run (he even defends Palin). So it's not worth discussing with him, he just comes up with excuses for things and just gets argumentative. I'm not saying the republicans are all bad, but I don't think ANYONE can say they are all good (or that either party is all good for that matter) but yet he finds a way to do that.

Soooo not worth it in my situation. And my MIL is a BS-er and tells people she is independent but she too is a registered republican and always votes republican. Oh, and her reason is 'I know this is illogical, but I feel like a vote for any Democrat EVER in the future is a vote for terrorism.'
