Do you ever talk politics with ILs?

Original post by bluegreen08

I knoooooooow it's just asking for trouble and usually I keep my mouth shut but this was the discussion for about 2 hours last night and after a glass of wine I couldn't sit it out. I was respectful but definitely participated

Luckily DH was on my side for this election but neither one of us agree with anything his parents had to say at all, and it also hurts their credibility when they dont even know the correct names of the candidates

I know it's a no-way topic, but with the election looming have any of you discussed politics with ILs?

My FIL would vote for ANY republican candidate and defend ANYONE they put up there to run (he even defends Palin). So it's not worth discussing with him, he just comes up with excuses for things and just gets argumentative. I'm not saying the republicans are all bad, but I don't think ANYONE can say they are all good (or that either party is all good for that matter) but yet he finds a way to do that.

People like this scare me! Politicians are always contradicting themselves so how can you possibly agree with one all of the time?

I know, and it's to the point where like, if the Republicans put up Obama, they'd support him b/c he'd be republican. It's just ANYONE who gets on the republican ticket - that's who they back. I am a democrat generally speaking, BUT I listen to both sides AND I would vote for the CANDIDATE not the party, that I agreed with the most (e.g., in the local elections this year I'll be voting for a republican judge whose views I happen to agree with).

We speak about it all the time. We pretty much see eye to eye when it comes to politics so it is definitely a safe and fun conversation. It gives me fuel for having my weekly debates with my coworkers.

I will talk with my MIL about politics, since we are pretty much on the same page politically. I don't talk about politics with my FIL, since we really don't agree on things politically and he respects that.

I never do. His mom is so opinionated that no one can get their point across b/c she dominates the conversation and I just don't listen to what she says. I just keep drinking my wine...
