Re: Do you have different spiritual beliefs than your DH?

I am born Catholic and FH is Jewish, so yes fundamentally our religions are different. With all the current 'Jesus press' going on and new theories being brought into the mainstream by The Da Vinci Code (jesus and Mary Mag were married and had a child), I have definitely been re-thinking my own thoughts to what I believe is true.

Have you talked about how you want to raise your children? I would think that would be something you want to talk about right away, You 2 can have separate beliefs, but how do you want to raise the children? Don't get too caught up in the labels though... I see no problem in raising your children to be good, honest, caring, compassionate individuals and to treat others the way they want to be treated. Don't all religions say that anyway?!

kmc, your own personal spirituality is just that -- YOUR OWN! It's something that comes from inside you, and I think its OK not to let DH in completely on that kind of stuff. If your beliefs help you get through tough times, daily stress, and challenging times, then that is fantastic! Let him be a skeptic, and let yourself believe in what makes you feel best.

No we are pretty much the same on most things. It is one of the FEW things about our families (upbringing) that are similar.
We both attended Roman Catholic grade school and high school and made all of our sacraments and really wanted a Roman Catholic Mass. When we got married we felt that three of us got married that day, him, I and the Holy Spirit and as long as we don't forget that we will have no problems.

I thank God for him everynight!

Have you tried going to church together? My husband and I always had even when we were dating. Since we were in a LDR we felt it was very important to take atleast an hour an go to mass together when we were together.

I think it might be more of an issue of fully claiming who I am or what I believe in regardless if other people (including my DH) agree with me or not. It's just harder to do when the person you love most is not on the same page in some areas.

I hear you Karen, b/c I am much more religious than Craig. If I go to Church, I go alone and sometimes it bothers me and sometimes I dont mind but I know what you mean b/c I wish he would come b/c then I think he would see why I find it so helpful and peaceful, doesnt it drive you nuts that in your DH's line of work he doesnt believe in God? Mine doesnt the way he should either, and I pray every day for his safety but tell him all the time how he should do the same.

Roger is surely but slowly sharing in learing more about Christianity, we pray together, he comes to church with me ocassionally and I read the bible to him every now and then. Just that we pray together every morning has made me feel so much better that he is trying, I noticed he has even made the effort to say to me, honey let's pray. God works in mysterious ways and in his own time and I believe he can soften even the hardest of hearts.

Maybe if you don't stifle your beliefs he will be persuaded. They say men are drawn to Christ by our actions, not by words only. I wish you all the best. It cannot possibly be easy.

Karen, was he ever taught 'anything'??? I was taught that we are drawn together to benefit each other in some way. Maybe as you say if you share more or practice it more openly he will be inclined to want to learn more of what makes his wife so happy. Or what gives her, her hope when there seems like there is no hope. You will be surprised how a little explaining can change a person's perspective. I will be thinking of you sweetie

My FH is basically agnostic. I knew this when I went into the relationship.

I honestly don't know what I would call myself. I am not a big fan of organized religion. I was raised Christian but don't practice because if that is truly what I believed in I wouldn't be living in sin and I would follow a 'christian' way of life which I don't.

I belive in God and I pray for guidance but what are who I pray to I don't have a whole lot of clarity on nor am I really looking for any. I am happy and it works for me.

I have debated whether or not to raise my children in church. FH is fine if I choose to but he has made it clear that he won't participate nor pretend to believe in something he doesn't. At this point I feel that no matter how I raise my children as far as religioin goes they will make an informed decision on their own when they are old enough. That is basically what I did. I stopped going to church at 16 and rarely looked back.

I don't want to divide my home nor do I want to go to church to put on face for my children so we will just raise them to be good loving people and they can decide as adults what religion if any they want to practice.

We were both raised Catolic, attended Catholic schools, we even met at the Church Youth Group. I am still very active in church (I direct the Children's Choir and am on the Youth Board), but my husband is not.

He has some issues with the Catholic church and what some of the beliefs are and has trouble accepting some things. He is still very spiritual and prays often though.

If/when we have children though, I told him that I'd like for them to be baptized and receive all the sacraments and if, when they're older, they decide to do whatever they want, then that's fine with me. He has other feelings about that, but I feel so strongly about bringing a child up with some sort of religion, that we'll probably go my route.

I seem to have the opposite problem. My DH is the religous one and I am not. We both are from Catholic families, went to Catholic school and were married with a full mass. I am just not a fan of Catholicism, but I do go to church with DH. I do it for him. We will raise our children Catholic and will probably even send them to Caholic school.
