Dh always says we cant refreeze after it has thawed so a lot of times our leftover meat goes bad. I used to refreeze all the time when I lived at home and my mom does it all the time. He swears we will get sick but Ive eaten refreezed meat before. What do you think?

Re: Do you refreeze meat?
I'm afraid to bec I don't want to get sick, esp with chicken. I would rather throw it out than take a chance

Re: Do you refreeze meat?
Prob. not a good idea. My mom always told me to buy the family packs then seperate it into daily portions and put then in ziplock bags in portions so I wont have to refreeze after its been thawed..makes sense to me

I don't because then the meat tastes like it was frozen and I don't like that taste.

Re: Do you refreeze meat?
I refreeze meat sometimes. I don't think it's that big of a deal.
Although, what I find helpful to avoid that is if I buy a big package of something I break it into smaller packages that's about what I would use to cook meals with.

Re: Do you refreeze meat?
I never do with beef, chicken, etc - but I do it with bacon ... ??? Not sure why but this seems ok. I only cook 6 pieces of bacon when we have it - 3 slices for each of us to save calories and then I refreeze the rest.
Cassandra -- when you buy a bunch of meat that you can't possibly eat in one sitting, divide it up into smaller portions before you freeze it. That way you can only take what you need for one night's dinner. Or, cook a big amount, and then you have leftovers for the rest of the week. I do both.
To answer you question about why it's ok for the supermarket to sell it chilled and not frozen, I am not sure - but I would imagine it's because it's pretty fresh and is 'new' - it's never been frozen yet so that's why it's not frozen at the store. I think bacteria grows when it's left on the counter -- as long as it's COLD it will be ok.

Re: Do you refreeze meat?
You can refreeze it if it's cooked. If it's not cooked don't re-freeze it.
