Do you think North Shore Animal League
Is the best place to find a puppy if you want to rescue one and not go to a breeder or petstore?

Re: Do you think North Shore Animal League
not sure on puppies, but we got our kittens at the Little Shelter in Huntington, and had a wonderful experience. We also had looked at North shore, but chose to go with Little Shelter

Re: Do you think North Shore Animal League
It's a good place to go. I adopted my dog, Irwin, from there when he was only 10 weeks old. You can also check out ACC in Brooklyn. Unfortunately ACC is a kill shelter so it's always nice to adopt from there. You might be saving a puppy's life! Here's a picture of Irwin from the day we adopted him!

Yes, but the puppies go quickly, so get there early in the day.

Cute puppy!!!!Btw, this post reminds of the post a year or so ago w/the crazy who said we were heartless if we didn't adopt larger dogs. Or something like that.

Re: Do you think North Shore Animal League
I did want to add one thing- take everything the people working there say witha grain of salt. When I was a teen, a few months after my childhood dog passed, my whole family went to NS to adopt a pup. My old dog was a german shepherd mix and we saw another German Shepherd mix pup when we got to NS and fell in love with her. Little did we know at the time that he purple tongue meant she was mixed with Chow Chow. I don't like to 'blame the breed' but Chows are notoriously NOT family dogs. The NS worker assured us she would be an excellent dog for families, including one like ours with little kids.
Couldn't have been more wrong. She wound up biting both my younger brother and sister (on the face! My bro nearly lost an eye!) and was aggressive to the point where we had to give her up. So just do your research and don't take what those stupid workers say to heart. Good luck!!!

Re: Do you think North Shore Animal League
idk about puppies, but we got Clover there and she's been nothing but spectacular (minus the old age and spite issues) for the past 16.5 years!i remember when they came to our house to check on her a couple of months after we adopted! i'll never forget that. i answered the door and this woman is like 'hi, i'm __________ from the NSAL. is that Clover I see sitting in the window?' I was afraid they were going to arrest me! I'm like 'yes but the window is closed! i swear!'

Re: Do you think North Shore Animal League
Maybe you should try petfinder.comYou can find the local shelters and view the dog even before you get there.
My cat was from one of the rescuers on the site.

Re: Do you think North Shore Animal League
I love ns bc the animals are all vet checked bf you adopt and if something does turn out to be wrong you can bring them back to NS. Plus if they are a puppy they give free spay/neuter. We adopted my 2yr old dog from there and he is the best. We tried to adopt from the local pound and the dog ended up having cancer and we had to put the dog down a week later. Heartbreaking.

Re: Do you think North Shore Animal League
I got both of my babies there. I am always so happy with them. I don't think I will ever buy a dog from a petstore. Prob not a breeder either. Both my pups are amazing animals. Great personalities and perfect health. One is a pure breed and the other a hound mix.Good luck! Yay pups!

Re: Do you think North Shore Animal League
They are OK. I think they tell you what they think you want to hear. We adopted our dog from the New Rochelle Humane society and I HIGHLY recommend them- It is a short drive from Nassau and Queens. They even offer a free vet visit and 4 weeks of free dog training classes included with the adoption.

Re: Do you think North Shore Animal League
I got two cats from there and had a very good experience with both. One of our cats got sick a week after coming home and they paid for all of his vet bills ( and they were high) as promised.
