Do you use a tablecloth on your dining room table?

Do you use a tablecloth on your dining room table?
When we bought our dining room set 3 months ago it was in perfect condition as it should be.
Today, not so much. I should have paid better attention to it. Its dark wood and I love the look of it bare but I have seen some scratches and even some faint 'rings' from glasses left on it. Now, I'd better do something to protect the wood.
I could have a piece of glass made for the top of it but I'm not sure how much something like that would cost. The table also has a leaf (sp?) in it and I wouldnt be able to use the glass top piece if I expanded it.
What do you have on your tabletops to protect it?

Do you polish it? If you don't want to keep a tablecloth on it, get place mats. You can get a ton of nice ones at BB&B for cheap!

I am planning to get a glass made to go over it. Even though I have a leaf as well (which I dont use) I figure that when I have to use it, I will just put a table cloth on it. By the time they were done putting the set together I already have a scratch so I was not having that. I have a clear table cloth right now (the protector ones) on top of the wood until I get the glass made.
Trust me put anything on it to protect your table.

Can you get table pads? My grandmother used to have them. We put them on top of the table then put a tablecloth over that.

I definitely use a table cloth and have used one since I got it and it still has a sratch from when I took the table cloth off to wash it. If you don't like table clothes you can use place mats to try and protect it.

My dining room table is of dark wood with a glass top. I dont use a table cloth because I like the look of the glass. we rarely use the table but we do when guests are over and I use table mats. I use pledge for the wood and windex for the glass.

I have my parents dining room set, and it's about 45 years old. It's all scratched up and has some water marks on it, but I am hesitant to get rid of it because tt was custom made by a friend of theirs, and when closed is a round. I can add up to 4 leaves which will seat 12 people comfortably. I keep one leaf in and cover the table with two table cloths - one oval that just fits the top (for padding) and another decorative one over that.
If you don't want to use a table cloth, then you should use placemats. And always use coasters under glasses to prevent water rings. I've found that Old English is the best furninture polish. Lemon Oil is another good polish, keeps wood from drying out.

I have table pads on top of my dining room table. I can only put a tablecloth for show but once we are eating I take it off because DH ruins all of them!

I just use a tablecloth. Fortunoff's has them on sale now obviously, and I got a really nice long table cloth for $12.00.
We also have a leaf and I agree that if you got a glass top, it would be hard if you put the leaf in , you couldn't use it.
Make sure you use trivets or pot holders when you place anything down on the table for dinner. Just be careful when placing anything down on the table.
Maybe you can even get decorative place mats , so if someone sits down at the table to do something, they can do whatever they want to do on the mat and not on the table!

I use tablecloths from time to time.... Right now we only have a small dark wood dining set that we got at KMart 3 years ago when we first moved in.... so I really don't care what happens to this.
I know Orange Glo promotes it fills in scratches - maybe try that?

I bought about 6 of them when we got the table and they were this woven light blue fabric ones. They got so marked up and stained. I mean I guess thats the point of having them but I was spot cleaning them after ever meal with a tide stick so I figured a tablecloth would be the way to go.
This weekend I actually went to BBB and bought a vinyl tablecloth because I would be able to wipe it down. Yeah.....thats going back because the second i put it on the table I realized that it was looking tacky and cheapened the look.

I like this idea of the clear tablecloth. And with the right fit it may not look too sloppy.
