I just got 2 emails asking me to donate to people walking for illnesses. Do you contribute to all who ask? Then I have all the friends who have kids selling candy/chocolate/cookies etc....jeez where does it end?? Do you feel guilty if you dont give?

i will buy from children selling stuff-as long as every child in my complex isnt coming at the same time. I do donate as much as I can-but I agree sometimes its a bit much. If I donated to everyone I wouldnt be able to pay my own rent

Re: do your friends ask for donations?
I send mass emails to everyone. Some friends donate and some can't. Same with when I'm asked. I'll donate to some and not others. alot of it matters to me the cause

Re: do your friends ask for donations?
I do when I can. I try to donate to a different charity every month, so if I donate for a walk or something, I just count that as my charity for the month.

Re: do your friends ask for donations?
I get them sometimes. Depending upon the charity I decide whether or not to donate.
As for kids selling stuff, my school is fundraiser crazy - it is so overboard.
For example, 12th graders sell chocolate; 10th graders sell gift wrap, pizzas, pretzels, etc, honor society sells plants and gift baskets, teachers raise money for the scholarship funds by raffling off a floral arrangement every week, a gift basket every month and they also prepare soup every Monday which you can buy for $3. Also if you ever go to a happy hour they always have 50/50. Worst off they try to guilt you into participating in all of this - the teachers are the worst - I mean enough is enough - I understand I work in a very economically diverse area so some kids have a lot and some have nothing but I can not fund trips and college educations for all of these kids when I have my own bills to pay. People will be like well it's only $5 for the raffle tickets - yeah if I buy them every week we are talking about $300.

thats out of control. i hate that they try to guilt you into buying, thats just low.
as far as deciding on the charity, again, I find it very hard to say no to one and yes to another, especially since I work in healthcare and I actually see all of these illnesses first hand and they ALL deserve to get funding but obviously that's impossible. I haven't replied to my 2 friend's emails because I just don't know how to, I haven't chosen anything at this point and I feel torn about that.
Thanks for all of your replies

Re: do your friends ask for donations?
Interesting this comes up. I personally donate what I can when I can. But the other day, one of the girls who used to date a friend of mine is on my MySpace and posts a blog about having a condition. Nothing real serious. Well, at the end she includes a link asking everyone to donate. I click on it to see what charity it is, and it's a PayPal thing that goes to her! I couldn't believe it. Needless to say, I didn't feel guilty not donating. This is the same girl who posts a Christmas list every year for items at Frederick's of Hollywood.
