Just wondering - Does everyone still use their checking acct that you had when you were single, or did merge money and open a joint checking?
We've had a joint savings for a while now, but I'm hesitant to close my checking acct and go under his, since it's such a pain to do that!! Not sure if it's worth it?

Re: Does everyone use a joint checking account now?
We did opened our joint checking when we first got engaged. It wasn't too much of a pain to do, and we find it easier managing our money when it's all in one place.
I think it's a personal preference. Do what feels right to you and James.

we do have a joint checking account. But we had it since we were engaged. I am the one in charge of all the finances, so I guess that is why it doesn't bother me so much. DH wouldn't even know where to find the checkbook, let alone what the account number is.

We have our own checking accounts. We are thinking of opening a joint savings account.
It doesnt bother us the way things are. Maybe when we get married we'll have a joint account, but for now as an engaged couple its our own accounts

It got really confusing keeping them seperate. I don't like having to ask my husband for money and saying 'you didn't pay for....' We just got a joint checking/savings open this week. It's a personal preference but I find it easier.

We have a joint checking and each have our own savings. Much easier to pay bills with the money all in one place for us.

Terri, we have an account that we invest in together and we have an account that we save in together.
We both have our own accounts that we came in to the relationship with. This works perfectly.

We could never have a joint checking, I am very anal about balancing every penny and keeping the receipts, hubby just goes from memory. One thing I can say he is very good with the bills that he has to pay. He even over pays sometimes. See what good record does for you

We have a joint savings ('house account'). We both hold separate checking accounts (actually I have 2 - one in my maiden name and one in my married name). I currently pay all the bills (rent, utilities, etc.) He puts the same amount into savings. The we pay our own credit cards and gifts and stuff frlom our own checking accoutns.
Right now it works for us to have separate checking accounts esp. since I am so anal about balancing and he isn't as anal (and he is the banker/accountant/finance person!)

Re: Does everyone use a joint checking account now?
We never technically opened a joint account. We have always maintained separate accounts, but after we were married, in order to deposit check made out to 'Mr. and Mrs.' we had to put each otehr names on our accounts. So I can sign his checks and vice versa, but that's rarely happened.
This has worked for us and neither of us desire to have yet another account. I pay certain bills, he pays others and it works out well.

Re: Does everyone use a joint checking account now?
We each have our own checking accounts, but like Trish, each of us is on the other's account, jic (so it's like having joint checking, but not really). Although I don't write checks from his account (even though I could) and he doesn't from mine.
Our savings are joint. However, ALL our accounts are linked (same bank) and therefore, it's so much easier to transfer money, if necessary, and check the balances, etc. With a mortgage now, it's just easier this way. He opened his checking at my bank to be able to link the accounts.
Shamma ... Rob and I are the opposite - he's more like you, Mr. Meticulous, and I'm the one who goes by memory!

Re: Does everyone use a joint checking account now?
I closed all my accounts and he did the same, and we opened all new joint accounts.. its much better (cause he makes more than me and i like seeing all that money in my account with me as the primary!!
Re: Does everyone use a joint checking account now?
we were going to keep our seperate accounts...and have some moeny deposited into them...and the rest into joint...
but when John was laid off...we scrapped that idea...and went all with the joint...I guess you just have to go with the flow...now we are so used to the one account (and he closed his seperate - I didn't since I rolled over a 401K)

No joint acct for us, and he actually keeps track of his money, while I do it from my head/memory (and I am a finance person). We're still not sure what we'll do with our money when we're married. For now separate accts works for us...

Re: Does everyone use a joint checking account now?
we opened a joint acct for the wedding, but still had our separate accts too. About two months ago we consolidated everything - made my accts joint and closed his. Its SO much easier now to have the full financial picture with everything in one place. The money was all 'ours' before anyway, but I never knew exactly what was in his acct or how much we were saving.
Its especially important now that I don't have a salary coming in. I need to keep a closer eye on the cash flow.

Re: Does everyone use a joint checking account now?
We also closed all our 'old' accounts and opened up a new checking and new savings account with a new bank. We have 1 joint credit card and the rest of the them are in our own names... However, I will probably be adding his name & SS to all the accounts as his credit isn't as good as mine so i would like him to get some positive association. My mutual funds from before we were married are still in my name. We'll probably use it for part of the 'house' fund.
Since I do all the bill paying, It is easier to have the $ in one place...When he needs money he usually tells me and I get it for him b/c he's too lazy to go to the ATM! This is better though b/c if he did go to ATM I'm sure he'd lose the receipt and forget to tell me & then the checks would be bouncing.

Re: Does everyone use a joint checking account now?
we are not married yet (i know, i'm on the wrong board!), but we bought a house in february & opened a joint account right away to pay the mortgage, utilities, & save. i wish we could have separate accounts so i can go shopping & not have him know how much i spend on shoes! but with a new house (& mortgage) i have to get my spending under control & having a joint account helps. & honestly, there is no extra money for shopping anymore! owning a house has changed everything!
