Does everyone use a joint checking account now?

Original post by Teri

Just wondering - Does everyone still use their checking acct that you had when you were single, or did merge money and open a joint checking?

We've had a joint savings for a while now, but I'm hesitant to close my checking acct and go under his, since it's such a pain to do that!! Not sure if it's worth it?

We have everything as joint accounts - Savings and Checking. Dh pays the 'house bills' and I pay my own credit card bills as they arrive. DH does not care what I do with the money (as long as we save some) and that's exactly how I like it!

Ladies just somthing one of my friends told me that works with credit.

She told us to keep separate and joint accounts. She said that if hard times ever come its best for one person to have bad credit but definately not both.

She said she has seen numerous couples mess up their credit that way.

Nope. We did not combined our finances. We maintain our own separate savings and separate checking accounts. We don't regret and are happy with this choice. It creates less headache, less arguments of 'yours, mines, and ours.' However, we did combined our wedding monetary gifts into a joint CD account.

Every couple is different, so joint vs. individual accounts depends as not every couple who combines or maintain separate accounts works best for their finances. Do whatever works best FOR the both of you.
