dog question

Original post by jenny11.9

We are considering getting a dog...well I am anyway.... we want something small, a toy dog of some kind and are between two right now - scottish terrier(scottie) and the king charles cavalier spaniel. I prefer the latter, I never liked the snout and beard on the scotties - but don't know enough about either. Any opinions?

Background: we have 2 adult cats, no children (though will at some point down the line), great yard that can be fenced in and an office that we own, so we can take the new dog along to work.

Re: dog question

I know you don't want a big dog, but we have the BEST black lab. He is like a person and he thinks he is a lap dog! At night if I am sitting on the couch he will just up and lay on my chest like a baby. Very funny. He is so smart (puts himself in the corner with his face down when he does something wrong) and he is great with kids. So if anyone is thinking of getting a big dog, labs are great.

I have a little Maltese. She is only 7 pounds. She is the best little friend around!

Re: dog question

I have a toy poodle. I know lots of people hate poodles with a firey passion, but I think that's because they know the stereotype, but never knew a poodle. He's 5 pounds, and full of energy ~ nothing prissy about him! He doesn't shed, which is great, and is very smart and easy to train.
I DON'T do the typical poodle cut... he's always all fluffy ~ a little puff ball!

Here's my Arnold...

Jenn, Pat's parents have a Jack Russell, and I love him!!! I'd steal him if he didn't shed so much!!

Re: dog question

Jenn my friend has one that don't shed. What kind do his parents have?
You are so lucky!!

Aren't they awesome though? How funny is it how high they jump?

Re: dog question

we thought about jack russel...but in doing research...we found out that they are hunting dogs and need TONS of space to run and romp around (something that we don't have)

bostons are jumpers too!! and don't shed at all

Re: dog question

His name is Buddy, and all I know is that he is wire haired (or coated? I can't remember), and he sheds like crazy. I wish he didn't shed so I could steal him!!! Your friend is very lucky!
Buddy's the fattest Jack Russell I've ever seen, but he thinks he's a tiny little lap dog and always wants to snuggle on someone's lap.

He jumps so high that he can't be outside alone unless he's attached to a 50 foot cable the runs the lenght of the back yard. He can run 50 feet in any direction, but can't get close enough to the fence to jump it or dig under. I know it sounds mean, but if you could see his energy level, you'd see it was for HIS protection.

And as for jumpers, Arnold is 5 pounds, but he jumps over his 4 foot doggie gate. We just bought a 6-footer, but it's only a matter of time before he clears it.

Yabbobay I will give the boston terrier thought too if I find out Jack's usually shed.

Re: dog question

I love dogs. though some of them I am allergic too. I think its the hair and saliva of them.

When FI and I move we want to get a dog. I want a bulldog and he wants a boxer. I think I am going to win this one. I told him I want a bulldog and I want to name him Harley.

My grandmother has a jack russell terrior and i swear its the dumbest dog in the world. The dog doesnt know its name, and it runs up and down the hallway and slams into the door. You would think the dog would learn its lesson, nope continues to do it everyday

Re: dog question

Your dogs are all adorable!!!!! Those little Boston Terriers are darling!! I would love to get a lab, but my husband is allergic to pretty much anything past the toy dog size. The bigger they get, the more sneezy he becomes! Jenrenee do you have any other pics of your cute little poodle? I have never seen them without 'the cut'…..Thanks ladies for your feedback! I am going to try to pitch this over the weekend. Wish me luck!

Yabbo -

What a cutie! I just love this breed. I've had them all my life (with the exception of a few Pekeniese (sp?) and a Pomeranian that my mom now has).

Both my Bostons love to ride in the car and love to snuggle at night under the covers. Angel is crated during the day because she tends to get herself into some trouble now and again - like chewing on the moulding, etc. They also loooooove their toys. I know what it's going to be like when I have a child because I have chewey toys and balls scattered all over the house. Angel has two 'babies' that she drags all over the house. They are with her everywhere she goes. She can't sleep without her stuffed cow, even when she's in bed with us. Both were said to be teacups - meaning they wouldn't grow past 12-15 lbs. Well, Angel is about 10, but Gizmo is over 25!! Time to take her to Weight Watchers with me!

Re: dog question

Shamee...

they sound just like ours...he has to sleep inbetween DH and me!! we saw a show stating that they like to have 20-25 toys!!!! He goes from one to the other and leaves them all over the floor...but he has a favorite too...a blue handball...we have tried fuzzy/plush toys, but he ends up tearing them to bits!! and then eats and throws up the stuffing...but they are so cute...and so friendly...when ever I have a bad day...he comes running up to me - like I've been away for a month!!
