We are considering getting a dog...well I am anyway.... we want something small, a toy dog of some kind and are between two right now - scottish terrier(scottie) and the king charles cavalier spaniel. I prefer the latter, I never liked the snout and beard on the scotties - but don't know enough about either. Any opinions?
Background: we have 2 adult cats, no children (though will at some point down the line), great yard that can be fenced in and an office that we own, so we can take the new dog along to work.

Re: dog question
I have a shih tzu, and she is such a joy! And DOES NOT SHED!! (they have hair like we do, and not fur which sheds like crazy)Someone else had mentioned that shih tzus are smart dogs, and boy they are! I had her doing tricks from the time she was 3 months old. The books say that you arent even expected to start training until 6 mo. My cousins all have shih tzus from the same breeder, and they are all good, smart and loving dogs. FM me if you have any more questions.

Re: dog question
We are still batting them all around so to speak! We have been furiously watching the dog show that we have Tivoed! I have read a lot about these little Cavaliers and they are just adorable. I think it might be a good move for us, because they don’t shed terribly and they stay small. They’re kind of pricey though…
I would love to get a mixed breed, but my husband is allergic to certain types – shepherds, labs, retrievers…and I just want to be sure that there’s nothing else in there just in case! I am going to look at that little poodle too! I never saw them unclipped and that might be fun…I know he has no allergies to them at ALL.
Hopefully this weekend we are going to visit the Cavalier breeder and truck around and see what else we can look at! Thanks for all the input. I will let you know - Jen

Re: dog question
Vinnie & I definitely want dogs this summer. I have a Cocker Spaniel that is the love of my life. He is living with my mom & my sister now. (Long story) He's got a black lab, pitt bull mix at home. We were thinking about Pugs ... we want 2 brothers. We just can't wait until we can get started finding them.!

Re: dog question
A poodle would be a good choice if your husband has allergies. They're hypo allergenic.
yay dani - i can't wait to get the both of them!!!!!!!

Re: dog question
I found the cutest dog EVER!!! This little cockapoo! If I wasn’t such a tart when it comes to posting pictures, I’d find them and put them up… I will see if I can find a website for you guys.
It’s a mix of a cocker spaniel and a poodle. Just adorable.
Montauk...plans are in motion for April and May... we'll have to get our Bostons together for a play date!!
Susan...the pup is so cute...but the dog looks a little mean...what is their temperament?

Re: dog question
Now I like labradoodles!!! I am all over the place! My hubby said no to the cockapoo – he said it’s too girly. But likes the labradoodle. Which is a great option for us because they were originally bred to be guide dogs for people w. allergies. Their hair is like poodle hair so it doesn’t shed and is very delicate on allergic people! This could be it!!! I’ll keep you updated……

Re: dog question
Erica, we've done so much research on this breed, it's ridiculous. They're amazing with children and they've been pegged as 'natural guardians' especially the females. They also seem to 'think' before they act. So they're non-confrontational unless they see an obvious threat. They fail miserably at those attack training methods (with the guys in padded suits) because they end up backing off and circling the trainer (as if they're 'sizing up' the enemy first)
They're hounds. So they possess a lot of similar characteristics. Slightly laid back and they don't bark much.
They're very independent, don't respond well to standard training methods. Easily bored and need a lot of activity (reason all these people bring their dogs to these coursing meets)
