Down vs. Down Alternative

Does anyone have a Down Alternative comforter? I have a down but it's a few years old and I feel like it's lost that plumpness (which irks me because I paid so much money for it) I went to home goods the other day and saw they had Ralph Lauren Down Alternative comforters in king size for 60/70 bucks. I thought was a good deal but not sure how comfy down alternative is...anyone have any feedback? I just don't feel like spending a few hundred on a comforter right now!

Ugh, I'm not sure...my DH knows better with them. Do they go by count too? Because I think usually the higher count is better. We got a pretty good down comforter last year and I feel like it's already kind of 'not as fluffy'. Are you looking on-line or will you be able to see it at a store?

I have my down comforter that I have had for YEARS. It losts it's plumpyness too, but it's still warm and cool enough for me so I keep it.

I want to find another decent one, and I was thinking about the down alternative ones. I think the only reason why you would get a down alternative is mostly for allergy purposes. It's totally up to you though.

My dad has a Down Alt and he loves it because there are no feathers to shift around and ball up.

When the frigid winds of winter arrive, many people turn to lavish bed comforters to stay warm. Because of their luxurious feel and unbeatable warmth, down comforters are a popular favorite. However, down comforters are made from the down of ducks or geese, to which many people are allergic. Luckily, there are down alternative comforters.

Many of these alternatives are made of synthetic materials that simulate the look and feel of down. Primaloft Comforters, for example, are made from a hypoallergenic synthetic material that has proven to be a near match to down in warmth and comfort. Primaloft Comforters are available at The Company Store, Eddie Bauer and Land’s End.

Luxurious wool comforters, such as Euphoria Organic Wool Comforters, are also good down alternative comforters for people with allergies. This comforter is lightweight, warm, and luxurious like down, without the allergy risk. The Euphoria Comforter is made from lamb wool and naturally repels dust mites. It is available from the Allergy Buyers Club.

Comforters made from alpaca or llama wool are also options. Alpacas and llamas have softer and lighter wool than sheep, resulting in a lighter comforter. An alpaca comforter is also available at Allergy Buyers Club.

Some people are not actually allergic to down, but to the dust mites and dust particles that live in the down. Hypodown Comforters are an excellent alternative for those allergic to dust mites. Hypodown is a fill made from combining white goose down and milkweed. Hypoallergenic Hypodown traps the dust and keeps it from being inhaled.

Hyperclean, TempraKON, and silk comforters are still other alternatives that the Allergy Buyers Club recommends. As you can see, even those who suffer from allergies can enjoy the soft, light warmth of a down comforter or a close alternative to one.

We have down alternative from Home Goods. it was a Hotel Collection set. It's warm but after a while it starts to get a little flatter in the corners and in the middle. I have no complaints though. I figure if I don't like it in a few years I can get a new one.

It's fluffy still. But I wouldn't say as fluffy as the day we got it. It doesn't flatten and then re-puff when you sit on it like a real down comforter would do. If you have any synthetic fiber pillows it's kind of like that. Over time the fibers condense and flatten. But it's still warm and holds the heat. I would say if you want a down comforter go to kohl's. they have really good sales and if you get 30% off with your kohl's card it's that much more off. Over Christmas time I saw down comforters for 90 dollars.

I purchased that one from Home Goods and wasn't a fan. I ended up buying a real one the following winter.

I have both and I really like the alternative one because you can wash it.

Mine is a blanket not a comforter so it was never really puffy to begin with .

M*I*A just keep in mind you may want to go the alternative route for when you have the baby and he/she is in your bed.

we have a down alternative and its inside a coverlet - its very comfy and warm but its kind of heavy though - between the comforter and the coverlet its heavy

I have a down alternative and it stayed puffy over the years through washing and all, BUT its not all that warm. I know down comforters are supposed to be really warm, but this just isnt.

Maybe its just my cold house.

I think one of the comforters I've had is alternative-it wasn't feathers but it was warm like that. I liked it and the feathers didn't poke through.

By the way, this thread is making me so want to get in my bed but we have people over so I find it's a little less rude to fall asleep on the couch.

ETA: If you get the down alt and it's not very warm, maybe you can get a flannel duvet cover. We have one and we love it!

I have both, but prefer down. I think its worth it to spend extra to get a good quality, and make sure it has pockets, so the down doesnt ball up. Toss it in the dryer for 15 mins, it fluffs up again.
