Can someone steal electricity from you? Say a landlord? Me and DH are not home until at least 7 at night then watch maybe like 2 hours of TV. Even during the weekends we only have the TV going and sometimes the CPU. We never leave the CPU on over night and don't have an AC unit going or anything. We get central from our landlord. This happened another time too last summer where I got a really high bill for no reason. DH was thinking maybe it's somehow connected to my landlords pool fliter going? Anyone know why this would happen?

Re: Electricity Bill
I have no idea but what I have heard is that even if your appliances are turned off as long as they are plugged into the wall you get charged.

I heard that too, but nothing has changed. When Con Ed raised their rates, my bill went up like maybe 8 dollars or so a month. This months bill is almost 30 dollars more then what it usually is

Re: Electricity Bill
There is a summer surcharge check your bill carefully that is most likely the cause...I hate Con Edison they are such a rip off...I just received a $295 electric bill and DH and I are rarely home and only have one small AC in the bed room.

Yes it is possible to steal electricity. U can call your service & have them check it out however it may piss your landlord off. It can be a surcharge bill or some type of catch up bill if you normally have set bills they usually do a catch 2x a year according to the meter read.

That is a RIDICULOUSLY high bill, depending on how big your apt is... in my one-bedroom apt in Brooklyn, I used to pay $70-$75 in the summer months and closer to $45 or $50 the rest of the year. I never unplugged ANYTHING.

Re: Electricity Bill
Definitely call your electric provider and ask them to send a lineworker out to check out your meter. It could even be that your meter is reading wrong. Or your landlord could have had it set up wrong. Or maybe something with the lines going to each meter.
I work for the electric company so I know they would definitely come out in a day or two to check it out.

Re: Electricity Bill
Are you on a budget plan? If you didnt specify you probably are. I am and basically I get billed the same low amount every month and at the end of the year they adjust it for my actual readings and I get a bill with the difference that is usually higher. They will adjust once (or maybe twice) a year I believe.

They just put you on a budget plan without asking? I called and she said if somehow my landlord's pool fliter or something was on my line, it would be alot more then $30 extra. She said all she can do is next reading have someone do some sort of special reading on the meter..no clue. They won't send someone out.

Re: Electricity Bill
If your electric bill is high only in the summer, there's a good chance it has to do with your a/c unit. Do you have a new, energy efficient unit?
I know that we don't so our summer electric bills are really high. We bought a stand fan so we can run that instead of the a/c all the time. We only run a/c when we're sleeping.
