etiquette question...please help!

A friend of mine was invited to the interior design awards at the waldorf tomorrow evening, and it's black tie.

The only 'gown' she has is at the cleaners still as she wore it to my wedding

She is asking what she can get away with???

Could she pull off a really sharp black suit with sparkly jewelry or do you think a gown is mandatory???

I am so bad at this stuff.....

Re: etiquette question...please help!

I would have to see the suit.

Honestly when I think of black tie, I think of a long gown.

Re: etiquette question...please help!

Lots of women at mid-week, after-work 'black tie' affairs show up in black suits and pretty jewelry...at least the ones I've been to in NYC in the publishing industry. So I think she'll be fine. Hope that helps!

Re: etiquette question...please help!

My gut was saying she should wear a gown too, but seeing as it is an after-work 'industry' type affair, I thought she might be able to get away with it!

hmmm....

Thanks for the opinions girls!

Re: etiquette question...please help!

It depends on how serious the award are. Some of them are like big posh events and some are more business affairs.

Is she up for an award or presenting? Will press be there?

If she has no choice, then a black suit with fab shoes and accessories should do fine.

Re: etiquette question...please help!

She is just a guest, not presenting, not nominated. But there will be press....

I think I will just tell her she has to get her hands on that gown

Thanks everyone! I thought as much!
