Favorite Family Recipe
What is your favorite family recipe. You know the one that your grandma or grandpa made for you growing up that you still look forward to.I would LOVE for us to have a LIW cookbook. Wouldn't that be a great idea?

Re: Favorite Family Recipe
My grandparents owned a German deli in Brooklyn for 40 years...so its mostly items fromt he deli that I love...**German potato salad (NO MAYO!!) My aunt used to run the deli when my grandparents went to Germany and she tried to get the recipe from my grandfather...but he would just pick up handfuls of ingrediants and throw them in...while my aunt tried to measure them...
**potato pancakes...agian...nothing is measured...shreaded potatoes...shredded onion...a few eggs...some flour...and fry...
**crumb cake...was always the dessert...the cake part was like a yellow cake...and then the crumb is 1 pound margarine (melted), and I think 4(?) cups of sugar and flour...with some cinnamon...
(I have the exact recipe somewhere in a box)

no one can make stuff like she could. I do have a few of her recipes, but her mac&cheese was the best ever!

Re: Favorite Family Recipe
I come from a long line of mostly bad cooks except my father. He made the most delicious pot roast with sauce (not gravy) that was to die for. But he never wrote it down so I dont know how to make it:( I tried a few times but it's never as good as I remembered.

Re: Favorite Family Recipe
I know that they are simple things, but my dad used to make the best pancakes and the best grilled cheese sandwiches in the world. He passed away a few years ago and, I swear, I haven't tasted their match yet!!!

Re: Favorite Family Recipe
Michelle, my nanny made awesome gravy too. She's still with us, but can't cook any more. Everytime I try her recipe (a bit of this, a dash of that) it flops.

OK...I called my mom...the cake: (its a little dry...so my mom says she'll make a pound cake...or even a mix sometimes)
3 c flour
6 tsp baking powder
1 c sugar
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp shortening (but my mom says marg is OK too)
2 eggs (beaten)
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup milk
mix together - put in 9x13 pan
crumb topping
1 POUND (4 sticks) margarine melted
4 c flour
2 c sugar
pinch of salt
2 tbsp cinnamon
sprinkle crumbs on cake batter and bake at 350 for 30 min (but check)
when baked...sprinkle powdered sugar on top...

Re: Favorite Family Recipe
How about the recipe board replacing the May board when the May brides are all newlyweds? My favorite recipe is Raspberry Thumbprint Cookies.

Re: Favorite Family Recipe
In my honest, unbiased opinion, my mom is a great cook. I spent alot of time as a kid in the kitchen with her. Such great memories! One of my favorites is probably the easiest to make-icebox cake. Just make chocolate pudding, let it cool, and starting with a layer of graham crackers, layer crackers and the pudding in a baking dish. Refrigerate over night and serve with whipped cream.
