FIL story- would you be mad?
So, I'll try to keep this short...
We just got a new car. Being that we don't need 3 cars, I was going to donate my current car to charity to get the tax deduction.
My in-laws have 4 cars (one is a brand new Honda that they leave in the garage and don't ever drive). My MIL works in Jamaica, and doesn't want anything to happen to that car. Her car that she uses to get to and from work with is an old beat up car now, it was her parents car. This car of my MIL is on it's last leg, so they were going to buy the neighbors truck in Feb. so she can use that to go to and from work in. When I heard that, I suggested to her that she just take my car? I thought this was a generous offer since my in-laws do not have a lot of money and there really isn't anything wrong w/ my car.
Ok, so, they were thrilled and do want my car- no problem. I just need to get a copy of the title and sign it over. Once I do that, I would give them my car. Well, last Wed. due to the cold I guess it took a beating on my battery, and the car died up on Bell Blvd. We had my FIL come and jump the car and bring it to their house where it would sit in the driveway. FIL went and got a new battery, replaced that for me the next day. One side note is, I also had a bunch of stuff in my trunk (it's almost sad that it looked like it could be the Sanford and Son trunk!) FIL told me to come by at my earliest convenience to clean out the trunk. No problem, I could do that when we got back from our ski trip weekend for New Year's. The next day, last Thurs. I had off from work. FIL called me 10x's before noon to ask if I could come clean out the trunk??? Umm... what happened to my earliest convenience? I couldn't since I was getting ready to go away, I was doing errands etc. So, he told me he'd be home at 5pm and I could come then. Umm... did you NOT hear me???? So, to save an arguement, I went over there at 5 to empty out my trunk. Ok, he had already put a sticker on the back of his, emptied out the glove compartment and had bags ready for me. I basically felt like he just took my car. Then, he proceeds to TELL me that he'll add that car to their insurance on Monday, but he'll need a copy of my car insurance in case he gets pulled over. I'm confused, b/c how would you get pulled over if I'm not giving you the car until I get the title from the title bureau? I went home, and he kept calling me!!!! Michelle, did you find it yet? (We just got new cards and I didn't know where DH put them) 8pm, 8:30, 9pm... Michelle, any luck? I finally lost it- I call DH and tell him to call his Father and have them straighten this out. Naturally he doesn't call. The next morning, New Year's Eve, I just tell him, please, it's bad enough I feel like your Father just took my car, can you make sure he does NOT call me 50x's at work to make sure I've called the bureau??? Plus, he told me he had already added the car to their insurance, so I didn't need to give him the card for that.
My DH finally calls him to see what's up, and my FIL is telling him, I already spoke to Michelle about this. It's ok, I don't need the insurance card b/c of xyz.... and I'll just transfer the plates when I get the title. (My front license plate was also stolen - ugh) ANYWAY.... I'm just really frustrated b/c I thought I was doing a nice thing, and it's turned into a nightmare. Turns out that he wanted all this done by 12/31so they could get the tax break when they donoated MIL's old car to charity. Is it ME???? What's the big deal, you just got a car FOR FREE, from your son and daughter in law, and now, YOU are overstepping so YOU can get the tax breaK???? I guess it's all fine now, but I really don't feel like I'll be so quick to do them any favors in the future. Am I wrong? DH went on to say, this would've all been avoided had I just kept my mouth shut! Is HE kidding me???? NO- tell your Father not to look a gift horse in the mouth!!!! Oh, I was so mad-![]()
