Finances- how do you and DH handle them.

Finances- how do you and DH handle them.

I have realized that everyone handles their finances different. I know what works best for DH and myself (at least for now) and just wanted to get an idea. We went out to dinner with a couple this past weekend and this is where the question came to my mind.

ETS: We have a Joint bank account for our expenses and a joint account for savings.

Right now we just have a joint savings account. He doesn't use his checking account, he pays all the household bills online. It's hard b/c I make less than he does, AND I still have a lot of my own debt to pay off (student loan, car, credit cards, etc.) so I can't help with the household bills as much as I would like to. I try to contribute by buying our groceries and things like that but I wish I could do more

We do everything jointly, we have for years, when we did a budget we do it on our total income. Although i am the one in charge of paying the bills, DH hates to do that, actually I let him one time and he got it all screwed up and he admitted I was better at paying them then him, cause as soon as one would come he would just make the check out, me I wait til the next pay to do it...LOL He is such a guy.

My DH is the same way. The bills that he is 'responsible for' basically calling in the payments I have to send him reminders. He feels important when he does that so I just check online to make sure that they are not late

Our finances are all together. His money goes into savings and the money I make pays bills.

We have a decent amount in savings but I'm currently out of work. He pays the majority of the bills right now (household) but I manage the food shopping and my personal bills (car payment, credit card). Once I'm working again we'll merge accounts for bills but keep separate accounts with a little spending money for gifts and such.

We have joint savings and we have seperate checkings but Im actually going to close mine and join with his because its getting annoying paying bills out of two seperate accounts. so i put in the change for my direct deposit.

Our savings and checking our joint. But since FH has no concept of living on a budget or the bills we have another joint checking that is linked to the others that I leave his spending money in.

I pay all the bills with our money and I just transfer whatever is left for his pocket into the other checking for him.

I actually prefer it that way, he's not good at paying bills on time so I handle all expenses and the savings. Currently we split everything. We make about the same thing so it works out easily

we have a joint savings and separate checking accounts.

I pay all of the bills from MY checking account. DH is responsible for ALL cash spending money.

Anything leftover goes into our JOINT savings account.

I am in charge of everything LOL his name isnt even technically on the joint account I just call it that because he can take money out and put it in ( its an ING so he does it online )

Well DH added me to his bank accounts and I added him to mine. We use different banks, and although I added him to my account I still left it in my unmarried name, the bank manager recommended we do this...lol.

The savings is still in my name and we put most of the money in my savings account b/c we get a better interest rate than DH's savings account. As far as bills go, DH pays mortgage and I pay everything else, including property and school taxes.

All of our money goes into the same joint checking account and savings account. We view everything as our money, our debt , our bills. We go over the bills together every month and figure out how much goes into savings ect

Re: Finances- how do you and DH handle them.

it sounds a lot more complicated than it is:

We each have our own citicard in our own name, but we pay them off with our joint account each month. We used to alternate paying for things when we were engaged, even though we knew it would all be our money, but now DH usually 'pays' for dinner, and I do a lot of the grocery shopping but it's nice to know it doesnt matter since it gets paid from the same place anyway.

We decided to keep my Bank of America checking account, and close DH's, and we added his name to my account. I've been 'paying our rent' because I have checks in my name from the account and he doesn't have new checks yet. (We're waiting until I change my name to order them).

We also have ING accounts (we had our own accounts before we got married), but we linked them after our wedding. It's really nice actually... I still log into my account with my old log-in info but have access to all of our accounts. He still logs in the same way he used to, but has access to all of our accounts. DH also has an ING checking account, but in most cases we use my Bank of America account which is linked because it has a physical location and we have checks for it.

The one thing we do have separate a little is sub-accounts in ING. My old savings account had a decent amount of money in it so right now it's called 'Jen's Temp Savings Account' but we transfer money out of there when we need to. DH also has a 'Future Music Purchases' account that takes a set amount of money each paycheck. We also have a separate sub-account for Wedding Gift money, and Wedding Gift CD.

Overall, DH tracks all of our purchases and finances in Quicken but we share everything. This seems to be working pretty well so far.

Edit: my salary from my summer job is in 'my' savings account, and right now we're just living on DH's income. We will keep things joint when I start working full time in Sept. Right now we have been running purchases by eachother and notifying eachother, and asking permission if it's something big

We didn't fit into any of the categories...we do a yours mine ours thing. We put all the money in a joint account that pays for house and bills (this we split evenly for now) and whatever we each have left over stays in a personal account for things such as shopping. So far it's working. this is for now eventually we will just share everything...

We dont fit into any of those categories either
DH has his own bank account and so do I.
He pays the bills from his account and saves.
And I pay my bills from mine, and also save in that account.

DH pays 99.9% of the bills.
I only have 2 credit cards with very low balances i pay off every month, so i am able to save most of my money.

We still have separate checking accounts. I added him onto my checking account but we still keep everything separate. The only bills we split are cell phone and car insurance so we take turns paying every other month. Other than that we make our own money and pay our own bills.

I don't know if I will ever be able to really have a joint account. I like to know how much is in the account and that my checkbook will balance! DH is not very responsible financially and I pay a large amount in student loans every month so it is going to be difficult to ever share an account!

We use separate bank accounts.
I pay about half our bills from mine and he pays the rest from his. There are certain bills he always takes care of and certain ones I always take care of.
We think of it all as 'our' money though, we don't think of it separately.

Everything of ours is mixed together. We have a joint checking and joint savings. I do all the billing so DH gives me his paycheck every week and I use it towards our bills. Any leftover is split into savings and spending. My paycheck goes directly into our savings account.

DH and I put everything into the checking each month. I make sure all the bills get paid and whatever is left gets rolled into the savings. I have a 2nd job that goes right into the savings for a house. I handle all of the bill paying and budgeting though, but our money is together.

We have joint checking and savings along with separate checking accounts. Our direct deposit goes into the joint checking acct. We decide how much to save and transfer that to the savings. Then we look at what we need for bills and leave that to the checking. The balance we divide equally into the separate checking accts. I don't need him knowing when I splurge nor do I need to know when he does. As long as everything is paid and we are saving whatever he does with his 'rainy day' cash is his business...I figure this way if he gets me something for xmas, anniversaries etc I won't know and it'll help keep the surprise.
