I just changed my name on my passport, social security card, drivers licence, and credit/debit cards in1 hour. I think thats pretty fast for all the paper work. I used MissnowMrs.com, a LIW vendor. You input all your information and they fill out the forms for you. I highly recommend it because all the paperwork can be a pain.

Re: For anyone changing their name
wait--you mean they do the forms for you--and then you print them out and bring them to the places you need to?

You insert the info, the fill it out for you, you print it out and mail it in. You dont have to go in person for anything.

Re: For anyone changing their name
i had to go in person to SS and DMV since they make you take a new pic.
ETA: i believe if you live in an area that doesn't have a SSA office nearby, you can do it by mail. my neighborhood has one, so i had no choice but to go in person.

DMV told me that when I change my name I have to get a new pic, which would mean I have to go in person. Is that not true? If I can avoid a trip to the DMV i'd be so happy.

yup, they make you go to DMV to take a new pic when you change your name. i think only SSA you can possibly not do in person depending on where you live.

Re: For anyone changing their name
if you dont want to go to SS you can go to ssa.gov and print out the SS-5
then you have to send the ORIGINAL marriage certificate and an ORIGINAL identity document ( license, passport) and if you were not born in the US, a proof of citizenship.
If you feel comfortable mailing those documents you can do it through the mail ( i wouldnt)

Re: For anyone changing their name
At DMV and at SS, you have to prove your identity in person, so how can the forms just be mailed in ? Plus DMV takes a new picture for your license.
I printed the forms myself from the internet and went in person to do the name change. Passport applications have to be mailed in with the old passport and new photos. For bank accounts, I had to go in person and show my marriage certificate. Everything else is just a phone call.
I wouldn't want to give anyone so much of my personal information. That's just my opinion, so don't jump on me.

Re: For anyone changing their name
that just seems so odd to me. i wouldn't like giving out all that info to someone else to do for me. SS & DMV aren't so bad---and the rest--i changed my name by phone with all my CCs, it didn't take any forms at all.
obviously you were happy with the service that was provided to you...thats great. but IMHO i think its kind of a waste -- its not as hard to change your name yourself at all.

ITA i was in the DMV for less than an hour I was in personell at my job for less than five minutes everything else was over the phone
SS I have an unfair advantage bc i work here so it took me 5 minutes, but i have definitely heard that is the worse thing to change ((not bc of me tho i dont work with the public so dont blame me ))
but that does sound like an interesting service and thank you for sharing the information!

I am assuming you had to pay a fee for this....How much did it cost?
I did it all myself & it did not take me long at all. I only had to go to DMV & SS. Everything else was just a phone call and/or a fax of the marriage certificate. really wasn't a lot of work.

Re: For anyone changing their name
I was in and out of DMV and SS in like an hour (for both) I went right in the morning when they first opened. I printed the forms out ahead of time and was all set. Everything else (credit cards and other bills) I was able to do over the phone. I was dreading all of the name change stuff but it was not nearly as bad as I expected it to be.

Re: For anyone changing their name
I went to SS office twice. They never mailed me my card the 1st time....when I called the 2nd time, they said I had to go personally again...OR mail in original documents. I said....HMMMMM....you messed up on the 1st mailing....so....why would I do that?
It's not that hard to change you name for these items. It's when you work at an institution/ have licences, ect.

Re: For anyone changing their name
I spent all of 15 minutes at SS one morning- but it took a 45 min bus ride back and forth to get there but it was worth it.
I can't change my bank information until I get my new SS card.
DH called the DMV - he changed his address and such on his license and title/registration and the lady that he spoke to on the phone also changed my license (DH called me to get the D/L #) and they don't make you get a new picture. I just had to pay like $5 for a new copy of my license.
I also changed my name at work and with my local union- that was easy.
Also did a new voter registration card- you can go to the Board of Elections site and print out the new form and mail it in.
Passport is going to be the last on my list since it's least important to me atm.
