for girls who went to change their name at SS office

do they keep your marriage licence and send it back with your new card or do you just show it to them??

Hey wedding twin!!

I just had to show them mine. They need a photo id too. I used my passport but I'm sure a drivers license would have been fine too!!

Same here in NJ - just show it to them.

It's the passport process where you have to mail it in and they keep it for a while and then mail it back to you.

Never ever send your marriage license to anyone unless it is a photocopy. That is your only copy. You dont want anything to happen to it.
All I had to do was show it to DMV, Social Security office.

If you are doing the passport, you do have to send the orignial

I haven't gone yet. I printed the form out on the computer and have everything ready to go. Now I just have to get off my butt one day and go there. On the site it said I needed my birth certificate as well. Do I really need to bring it?

They just need to see it not keep it! The best thing was that I never even went to SS. I filled out all of the papers & my DH went one morning on his way home from work!

I gave him marriage certificate. My DMV ID, old SS card (which they kept). Don't think I sent my birth certificate.
