Forest Hills again....who lives there?

Forest Hills again....who lives there?

Hi guys. So much drama with buying a place. We cant afford brooklyn anymore but we can afford Forest Hills. What I need to know is, are there bad areas of FH? What is the most desirable area (streets) to live on? Is it all apartments or houses too?? Any websites on Real estate agents and FH info in general would be so helpful to me too. Also we need to be able to get to the city easily because we both work there. Thanks so much
Now I will be gone all day but I hope you girls can help me out.

I'm in Forest Hills Stacey!!! the neighborhood is GOOORGOUS. i absolutely LOVE it here :) Austin St. is more busy with tons of shops, restaurants, sorta mini-manhattan-ish...i'm over on Metropolitan which is still a strip....mainly restaurants and little antique shops. A little more quiet and residential. I like it here because our street is nice & quiet, but yet if we want the business of austin st. it's right up the block the homes are GORGOUS. there's tutor style MANSIONS everywhere...its just so pretty. plus u have the lirr and the subways right here :) i'm on metropolitan right around 72nd. ave. I would stay between metro & austin...its the heart of the neighborhood & ur close to EVERYTHING.

ps: not to mention we have the prettiest train station..EVER.

I'm very close to FH...
GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD.
I wish we could afford to live there.

There are 3 stops on the F line:

Kew Gardens/Union Turnpike
75 Avenue / Queens Boulevard
Forest Hills-71 Avenue / Queens Boulevard

The 71-Continental stop has express trains... but the F line, is going to give you at least 1/2 hour commute to manhattan.

We have to take a bus to the subway,... it stinks.

Re: Forest Hills again....who lives there?

we looked on craigslist, but the place we ended up finding we found through a friend. He hooked us up with our landlord if u have anything specific in mind(ie: house vs. apt, #of bedrooms, pets vs. no pets) let me know...maybe i can see if she's gonna have anything available...

but the neighborhood is so beautiful! i feel so safe here & everyone who visits falls in love not to mention it's literally a jump of the grand central..so it's easy for people to get too..

yea - i actually take the LIRR when commuting into manhattan...it's only 2bucks more and it's only a 10minute ride! subways always good too...just a little bit longer..

i'm right by fh. taryn said it best about the main areas. i'd just try to stay within walking distance of the subways since if you don't, that could add considerably to your commute.

I would go for LIRR over subway ANYDAY.

that's the glory of queens.

Where I live, we have the option to take the bus to FH, or the bus to Jamaica... depending on where you need to go.. buses s uck though.

Re: Forest Hills again....who lives there?

a friend of mine lived in the area near yellowstone blvd.. the presidential buildings i think they were called?? still close to all the shopping and not far from the subway stops.. nice little neighborhood of apartment buildings and theres a small park in the midst of it..

also the buildings around the cobblestone road not too far from the LIRR stop are cute as well... some have doorman...and come with private parking for along the roads just on 71st/Continental..

i used to commute in from FH to midtown and it would take 40 minutes on the E or F.. the trains esp at the 71st and continental stop can be crowded during peak rush hour times.. so the LIRR is prob better in my opinion.. they come frequently and more of a pleasant ride in!!

good luck

Re: Forest Hills again....who lives there?

i live in the area. Are you looking to buy or rent? The prices for condo's well ill say more like co-ops are not that bad. There are so many in the forest hills/kew gardens area that you can definitely find a good price. Austin street is great, metropolitan, yellowstone, even further down on austin which isn't where the shopping area is but more by lefferts is good too and thats where the LIRR kew gardens station is. Ive seen LOTS of apartments lately, I own an apartment now in the area but looking to buy a new apartment in FH or KG and have found alot of reasonably priced apartments. Depending on what you like I can recommend a couple of buildings, do you want one of those high rise buildings or the pre-war buildings. Pre-war will have higher ceiling, and the architecture is a bit different, i love pre-war buildings. Also right by forest park theres a couple nice buildings, i love hampton court which is right across the street from forest park. I also have a good real estate agent in the area if you would like. FM me if you want any info about prices, buildings or real estate agents name.

I take the LIRR bc its alot quicker into the city. The E and F train can take forever, it runs slow during rush hour. Its not a bad commute, i grew up in Astoria so compared to that makes it seem a bit longer bc astoria was so close to the city but its not bad from FH. If you take the LIRR it takes 17 mins from the kew gardens station to Penn station.

I lived in Forest Hills for 6 years. My mom still lives there by Yellowstone/108 street. Its beautiful around there. There are shops on 108th street and the train is a few blocks away.

I definatly need to come out there and take a look around. I guess I could wait for the real estate agent. If I dont wait for him and we just wanna walk around the neighborhood what should we take the Lirr or Subway and what stop should I get off on. This would be on a weekend keep in mind. Thanks girls

Re: Forest Hills again....who lives there?

If you are taking a day trip and want to walk aroung, I would take the LIRR to the Forest Hills station. Not sure if you are looking to rent or buy, but in Forest Hills Gardens, there are gorgeous tudor homes as well as apartments in brick buildings. My DH's friend live in an apt in there... it's lovely! Very safe, lots of trees, beautiful buildings. Check it out!!
