i LOVE park slope!!! when i lived in brooklyn, that was the place i really wanted to live, but it was too expensive for me to rent an apt there when i was single. you have prospect park right there, the brooklyn musuem, different train lines are all 5-10 min away. it's kind of like a much smaller version of the upper west side, just in brooklyn. the brownstones are beautiful!!! there are so many cute cafes and restaurants. it's an artsty community. i love it!!!

Both my brother AND sister live in Forest Hills with their families. My sister lives in a condo and my brother rents an apartment. They both really love it.

I find that it is almost like a 'little Manhattan' that is the vibe it gives off to me. There is great shopping and GREAT food. Also, a few parks that my nieces and nephews REALLY enjoy.

It is also a quick commute to Manhattan. My only complaint is the parking ( where they live anyway ). But I am spoiled by where I live.

i live near forest hills and honestly, i love the area - there are great restaurants and shopping all nearby and like mentioned, the commute into the city is really not bad at all.

I dont live too far from FH and I love it there!
Its got all the stores, banks, restuarants, movie theaters, gyms, anything and everything you need right there, not to mention subway, LIR, buses

Its great, - (clean also)

Sounds like both are great!!!! Wich one is closer to the city since we both work there and all our friends are there?

My friend lived in FH for a few years and LOVED it. She plans to move back soon.
ETA: I'm pretty sure FH is closer to the city. Some of my co-workers who live in Park Slope say it takes them 45 min to get to work.

if you take the E or F express at 71st continental, its fast like 20-30 minutes into midtown. i'm off the local line so it takes me longer even though i live closer, ironic huh?

i think park slope is closer, depending on which train line you take and where you're heading. if you're in FH and work downtown, that'll take longer. if you're in park slope, and work in midtown, that can take longer. i have coworkers who live in FH, and take the F train to work (57th st stop) and it takes them about 30-35 min if ther'es no problem w/the subway. the only bad thing about FH, when it rains really hard, the queens blvd train line gets badly flooded. otherwise it's a pretty quick straightforward commute. and if the tracks get flooded, you can always take the LIRR to penn. in park slope, if you take the 2 train, it's 15 min to downtown, 30 min to midtown. if you take the N, D or Q trains, it's even quicker to midtown since they go over the bridge.

We are in the same predicament and have more or less decided on park slope.

Many of my friends who live in park slope complain about the length of time that it takes them to get into midtown on the F train. Something to consider if you work in midtown.

Depends on where you work. If you work downtown, Park Slope will be closer. If you work in midtown, Forest Hills will be closer. Neither of them are that bad of a commute, but Forest Hills you can hop on the subway or go direct into Penn on the LIRR.

I love Forest Hills. I live in Astoria, but we go out to eat and I go shoppin Forest Hills sometimes....it's adorable!

I live in Forest Hills. My commute is 20-25 minutes on the train (EFVR) or 13 minutes on the LIRR. I love it! We even have Trader Joes now.

I know nothing of Park slope but think FH is fabulous! Always thought it would be a great compromise being close to the LI family and yet still not far from Manhattan.

Good luck whatever you chose.
The shopping is great there too , I would be broke

I'm a Brooklyn girl who lives in Park Slope, so i am a bit biased...I LOVE Park Slope. I have lived in about 5 Brooklyn neighborhoods and it is by far my favorite. FH, however, is the shorter commute. It takes at least 45 minutes to get to midtown on the R train, which is on my corner. There is the B/Q on 7th Ave. which will probably get you there more quickly and then the F, which I never take, so I can't comment. Where in Park Slope are you considering to buy? DH and I live in the North Slope. It's so pretty in the spring! Good luck with your apt. housing. If you have any Brooklyn questions, feel free to ask!

my vote is Forest Hills, but I'm a Queens girl who knows very little about Park Slope. like the rest of the girls said it would depend which part of Manhattan you work in as far as which area would have a better commute. A big plus w/ Forest Hills is that it connects to the LIRR and many subway/bus routes. always good to have options!

which area seems to give you more square footage for your $$$?

I vote for Forest Hills ... such a nice, private area - I would love to live there!!! Tons of shopping, trains (E,V, F and G)

my vote is forest hills - we live the next town over in Rego Park and will be moving in June to Kew Gardens (borders Forest Hills and is a little cheaper).

Quieter than Manhattan, I feel like you can relax here and its a real neighborhood with a lot of single family homes - great for jogging.

Parking is an issue in Forest Hills - easier if you go closer to Rego Park or Kew Gardens...but a lot of buildings do have garages, so its an issue but not that bad.

Never been to Park Slope but we have been in this area for 4 years and are now buying in Kew Gardens because we are really happy here.

Good Luck with your decision!

Re: Forest Hills??? Park Slope??

I lived in Park Slope when I did my short term college experiment at FIT in the city. I lived more in the Windsor Terrace area which was away from the main strip of stores and on the edge of the park. It was really a nice spot if you can on the main strip there. More galleries, artist community type - of course this was a few years back. I always said if I would live near the city again that would be it. It was about a 20 min commute I think on the F. But things have changed a bit.

I know a few people who live in a super gated building in Forest Hills and love it. I found though not much open space - no park and the community was less community and more city like where people are in there little sections and don't hang out like park slope. I mean its easier to do it with the park right there and there are always events going on.
