Today's QOTD comes from my DH and I talking about job changes and residence changes.
If you or DH had a really great career opportunity come up that would require you to be away from the other for an extended amount of time (at least a year), would you take it?
My answer is no way. I would never want to be away from my DH for that long. I get whiny and teary when he's away for one week. However, I guess our situation is a bit different in that my career track is completely effed up and I have nothing tying me to staying here. So if DH was presented with a great job opportunity elsewhere and he had to stay there for at least a year, I'd just go with him. I guess I am lucky in that regard - in not having anything to really be tied to here.

Re: FRIDAY 1/15 NWQOTD!!!!
It depends. DH & I have been apart before while he was playing minor league baseball after college. I think the longest we went was 5 or 6 months. It is defin not easy, but we made it work. We were able to visit one another once & awhile. Not as often as I would have liked b/c he was so far away. We started our relationship while I was still away at college for an entire school year. I think it wasn't as hard b/c he was traveling all the time w/ the college team then. This past summer we were apart from June-Sept while DH was away for training. I saw him once in July for the fourth he had a three day weekend & flew home, and once in August I met him halfway. It wasn't easy by any means, I kept myself busy b/c I was leaving me job, packing, and figure out our move. I think if the opportunity was really great we could do it if we had to. Now being pregnant though I don't think I could have DH be away, or he would want to be away once DC is born. I think the most we could handle would be a few weeks if he had to train somewhere.

Re: FRIDAY 1/15 NWQOTD!!!!
Def not for a salary but if it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for one of us - I think there would be a way to make it work - like if I knew it would make him so happy and be able to pick his career after AND be home - or if I knew it was something that would have been a forever dream dream - then same thing - I think the sacrifice would be worth it - now this is assuming we could do occassional wknds holidays, and vacations together. .
to be clear I would not at ALL want this situation but I would be willing to sacrifice if he needed it in his heart (but NOT the walllet)
unless it was some ridiculously unreal thing where he made 15 million dollars in 1 year then maybe

Re: FRIDAY 1/15 NWQOTD!!!!
My friend is going through this right now and it is really hard on them :( Her husband is homesick and has been flying home every weekend from Georgia. I try to keep her occupied during the week!
I don't know if I could handle it! We joke about him going on Survivor and how we'd miss each other and that's only 45 days!!

If it was something either of us really wanted and it would benefit our careers I think we would discuss it. I think we would both make a decision that benefited us as a couple. We each want the other to be happy.

I could never, I can't imagine anything work related being that amazing, but I'm not in love with my career.

I would not do an extended period of time away. I don't have a career per say just a job (which will end in June) so I would go whereever DH was going.

We did it for the year before we got married and it's why we got married... so we can be together. It's much better this way.

i would be ok with it unless it was a year away with no visits. I went through this with my family growing up and while it was difficult we made it work cause it was for a better life for our family. I feel that sometime you need to sacrifice for the good of the long term.

Re: FRIDAY 1/15 NWQOTD!!!!
DH and I have talked about this recently...His business is based in the Bronx and I may have the opportunity to do a post doc in Italy. It would be for a year...because of his schedule DH could probably spend 4-6 months there but the rest of the time we would be apart or only see each other for short visits. It would also delay us TTC. I think I could do it for a year but longer then that would be too much.

That's exactly how I feel. It would be hard but if it were something that would make either one of us happy and would be a dream situation for us, we'd make it work.
