Friendships and your marriage

Original post by michele31

I am the last of 99.9% of my friends to get married, so this isn't an issue for me much but I know that some friendships really change once you get married. Is this a challenge for you or for your DH?

Also, I know some friendships end when children begin to arrive. I guess common interests change, less time etc.. Has this effected your life? If so, how.

Claud, I'm so glad you said ~~> ***I have some friends who seem to have forgotten how to talk just to me about me, and not always turn the conversation back to my DH or my baby or my house***

Sometimes when I talk to my 'mommy friends' I forget to ask about the baby, or dh, and then after I've hung up I think 'OMG I'm so RUDE! ' AM I rude?? Is it okay to call my friend and just talk about her??

I have to agree with a lot that was said here, especially with Stef's comment about the diaper deposits. I was LMAO it hit so close to home!!

I am the last of my friends to be married (I got married at 29, they were all marired by the age of 25)! So, I am also the only one without children.

My hubby and I are still loving being newlyweds and will have children someday, just not now. That being stated, it has been tough, if not impossible to have any sort of conversation with my GF's because I am so far behind them in terms of childbearing.

I just distance myself from them, although not intentionally. We do go out every other month for a Girls Night Out, and every time I do, I come home and say that that's the last time I go. The entire night I hear about spit up and poopy diapers and baby monitors and baby sitters and baby baths and finger nail cutting.... Never once does any one stop to ask me how the house is coming or how my job is going. For some reason it bothers me!

Don't get me wrong, I love everyone of their children and love to hear the stories, but I feel that sometimes they forget that's not a part of my life yet and it doesn't interest me in the least bit, at least not yet!! It would be nice to hear them thinking of how I might be doing.

Okay, I'm stopping now.... Hope I didn't offend any mothers here. I'm sure my life will be about that someday, and when I do, I hope I keep in mind the person I am conversing with.

Claud: Thats an interesting perspective...I would have never really thought about it. When I ask about new mothers babies, I always do it thinking that its something they really want to talk about - so thats a good tip.

And I agree that we need different kinds of friendships...and to add to that - sometimes frienships die for a number of reasons. I have had a few friendships die of neglect after seeing that we just dont have anything in common or anything to talk about anylonger. Its sad but you have to accept it.

I used to have a big group of friends but over the years, the numbers have dwindled because some people just dont ever mature (who wants to be at the bar everynight? thats just as bad as the poopy diapers!) or their interests/lives/jobs/family/husbands drive them in a new direction.

Too bad there is an friend want ad :D

I think that friendships, like ALL relationships go thru growing pains also. Communications is the key. I am always amazed at how much we all have in common with each other.

Re: Friendships and your marriage

Some of my friends are married, many with kids. The rest are single and have no intention of settling down ever.

DH was the second among his group of friends to be married...since our wedding three couples have announced their engagements. The rest I predict will be engaged soon.

We like having different groups of people to hang out with depending on our mood...

Since DH and I got engaged, I've only had trouble keeping one friendship alive. One of my oldest and dearest friends from college is still a big time party girl-out every night of the week, always on the scene. Occasionally, it's fun to go out with her, but she's in a completely different world than I am! I just can't measure a good time by how loaded I was the night before, how late I stumbled home or who I caught the rap with. She gives me alot of grief about it...we were once the dynamic duo. I try to explain to here that it's just not my scene anymore!! Someday she'll understand?
