frosting trick?

ok calling on all you fabulous bakers out there...i made a cake last night (yummy bannana mmmmm) and frosted it, but when you frost it it has that swirly, messy look (which i understand some people love cause you know its home made)...but....i want to know how to frost a cake and make it look professional, smooth. Any advice? tia!

When I do it I try to make sure there is enough frosting, apply it liberally so you have full coverage, and then use a butter knife or a nice flat tool of some kind to smooth it over before it really sets up.

They also say to do a 'crumb coat' which is just a thin layer of icing on the cake and then refrigerate that so that it can set. Then you do a full layer of icing and it's supposed to be more smooth because the crumbs are sealed in.

Now, I have tried this and it's a little better but I am in no way able to get a smooth cake. I actually want to go to a cake decorating class at Michael's so I can figure this out. I tried to ice a cake at culinary school and just ended up cursing the whole time.
