Garmin Nuvi Registration?

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 255W. I went to their website to register it and it says that I have to attach it to my PC (I guess through the USB port) in order to register it.

Has anyone done this?

I remember reading somewhere (perhaps on LIW) that someone tried to download something to their GPS and it stopped working?

TIA

I didnt have to do that to register it. Howveer I had to connect the garmin to the computer using a USB (came with the Garmin) in order to Update my maps.
