I almost just lost my lunch. this is horrible!!! i just feel so bad for this lady and all the women who were left disfigured and now have problems walking from the foot binding practice.

This has nothing to do with Geishas.THis is a Chinese custom, not Japanese

I have never seen a documentary photo like that... Fascinating... and horrifying at once...

hence the reason i took that part out of my original post and stated above that yes it is a chinese custom altho the email i got w/ these pics did mention the times of geishas.

Does she had a thing inside the shoe that cut her feet? Liek it looks sliced..gawd...

Its not sliced, basically the easiest way to help you understand the picture is like this:

Take your hand and lay it flat on the table-then lift the palm of your hand but keep your wrist and finger tips on the table-that is basically what they ahve dont to her foot--that is the slit your are seeing (the slit part would be the palm of your hand) and the 4 outside toes are curled under. It is extremely painful

Thanks Peggy. That clarifies it alot but tossed my stomach even more. Thats really sad...the pain must have been immense. I wonder if she can wear regular sheos now or if they are more uncomfortable because of the position of her foot.

Yeah...this was an unfortunate practice in the olden days of China. Thank God they don't do that anymore. I can't imagine it! That lady must be in her 90s or close to 100.
