So, I just got my dog and he has been sick. He walked for about a 1/2 hour the second day but, now when I take him out he just wants to go to the bathroom and then go back. He doesn't want to walk around he just stands there. I even tried to bring treats and he walks like 2 steps and then is like whatever. How can he get any exercise if he won't walk. Maybe his last owners never walked him. Any suggestions?

Well if he isn't a puppy and he wasn't walked a lot he might not be used to walking. Try taking another person with you, and one person walking slightly ahead. Do you have a place where you can unleash him and let him He might not be used to the exercise either. Takes dogs a while to get use to their new surroundings.

If he's been sick, especially with kennel cough, he may not feel up to walking around much...i know when i got my rescue dog & she was sick she just slept alot until she felt better...will he chase a toy? If he will you could play fetch for a little bit...even in the house a short distance will get him moving.....and give him time to adjust...especially if he's not a puppy and had previous owners or was a stray.
Our one dog was a stray for awhile & she was in the garbage, on the counter when we were gone, etc...now she's a well trained great dog...but it took some patience, time & training...good luck!

1st make sure he is healthy and nothing wrong with him. I just got a new pup and will be teaching her to walk with leash, but it will be easier in my case cause I have two othet one's that she like to follow around. I kinda pulled my 1st one, not too hard, and she picked it up right away...they dont like being pulled.

Maybe he just wants to be left alone to get better. I know when I'm sick I don't want anyone bothering me lol.

I think once he realizes that the new 'bad' ways he is trying aren't working b/c you will impliment the same routines as before, then he will snap back into it. Just be consistent with what you were doing before. It's just like when you train a puppy, consistency is key. I am sure once he gets better he will be fine. Good Luck.

Sometimes it is difficult for dogs to get used to be on a leash, especially if they have never had to be on one before. Try putting his leash on him in the house. Even if it just drags behind him, he will get used to it being there.
Baby steps...
