girls who went to JHS/HS in queens

so we are trying to figure out where to buy a house in queens.. right now we are thinking bayside, whitestone, fresh meadows or hollis hills area..

i can google and get answers but like to hear from anyone who actually went to public schools in queens..

DH went to private school and most of his extended family did as well - so how does it work??

i know district 26 is the best(thats what i hear and have read).. so you are then zoned for elementary school - i'm assuming same as LI you go to the one nearest you. my question is what happens with 6th grade and forward.. you apply for various schools?? how do the kids get there public transport or thru the school?

sorry if i sound like a complete idiot.. but you guys are always very helpful!

TIA!!

hey, i grew up in queens and went to public school in jamaica. i was zoned for elementary and junior high school. we were able to apply to different high schools but there was always the zoned one that u could go to if u didn't get in anywhere else. ( actually went to bayside h.s.!)

I went to school in district 26!!! You are zoned all through HS.

But for HS, you have a choice to apply out to other schools....or take the standardized test for the specialized HS.

I went to elementary school and JHS in district 26....and went to Stuyvesant HS in Manhattan.

I think elementary school offers a bus up to a certain grade (might depend on the school)....in JHS, we took public transportation (same with HS)

everyone else answered but i was zone for my elementary and JHS school - i ended up in catholic school for HS but i could have gone to my zoned school OR applied to other HSs

Oh even in elementary school you can try to get your kids into other schools. . .my niece and nephew dont go to their zoned schools bc my sister looked for different schools with diverse programs for them

in elementary school you go in a yellow bus
in JHS we went in regular busses that almost followed their regular routes except they also stopped at the JHS too

in HS you are on your own OR i know some of my friends paid for private vans if a lot of people in the neighborhood ended up in the same NON zoned HS

Re: girls who went to JHS/HS in queens

Queens born & raised!!! Grew up in S. Ozone Park, moved to Howard Beach 2 years ago. I've heard all the school districts in Bayside, Whitestone, and that area are great!! but since I didn't go there, I don't have any info on them.

Howard Beach has PS 146 which now goes up to 8th grade, from what I hear its a pretty good school. I went to PS 100 in Richmond Hill, great school when I went, but its definitely overcrowded now. I also went to JHS 226 in South Ozone Park- from what I hear that place is a nightmare now!! And I also survived John Adams HS- it really wasn't that bad for me since I was in the humanities program, but they did already have metal detectors when I went there. Sorry I couldn't help you out more w/ the area you're considering!! good luck!!
