Girls with Dogs

Girls with Dogs

When did you start letting your puppy go outside to go to the bathroom? Ours is going to be 3 months soon, we've only had him for 2 weeks. We have him going on the pad, he still has accidents of course. Our last dog we would place him outside in our driveway at least once a day to get him to go outside, then eventually he knew to sit by the door. When he had to go to the bathroom when we were home he would know to sit at the door, otherwise when we weren't home, he would go on the pad. He died in a horrible accident though, I don't want to get intot he details, and now I am really afraid of bringing our dog outdoors now. We have a collar for him but an XS is too big, so I was thinking of just punching more holes in the collar so it fits around his neck, having him leashed of coure and maybe letting him go outside in the driveway once a day. The breeder said when she had him, he was going and sitting by the door when he had to go. We have the door blocked with a babygate so I don't think he even knows where the door is. What's the latest age I should start bringing him outside?

We got our puppy when he was 10weeks and we started him in our backyard right away. I didnt take him out in public areas until he had most of his shots.

He is 5.5 months now and completely house trained....he will have an accident if we ignore him but he lets us know when he has to go out. I think the sooner you take the dog out the better.....He never got used to being able to go in the house.

Yeah, I think so too. We did it the first night we got him, but he started wimpering so we brought him inside.

We got our dog when he was 8 weeks old at the end of Jan and the vet told us he couldn't go out until it was at least 45 degrees or warmer out, so we didn't bring him out until it was warmer because we didn't want him to get sick.

Now he's 7 months and we take him out all the time, he is still learning on telling us when he has to go outside

We started training our dog at 7 weeks...he's an apt dog and we didn't want to confuse him with pee pads and stuff.

same here, and from day 1 he was trained, we only had one accident! just make sure to put flea/tick stuff on him if he will be going outside.

Well I got mine in Dec, and she was tiny... she is almost full grown now and only 6 lbs, so we waited a while. I think she was 5 months because we had so much snow in Feb she would sink in our yard.

But once she/he has all their shots they can start going outside. I wouldn't wait to long. I wish I had done it sooner because she has been impossible to train.

I wouldn't do it before shots though because of all the animals that are out there and diseases they can carry... puppies eat EVERYTHING!

we got our puppy at 2 months old, we immeaditley began going outside, we refused to use wee wee pads b/c i honestly think they will never learn that way!

We waited til he had his lepto (sp?) shot. It is the one that you get that protects them from rabbies and all from the other animals outside.

Actually they do learn that way if you take them outside early enough, and even better they learn that when they are stuck inside a long time with no one to put them out they can go on a pad, which is coming in handy with my mom's dog who is on a diarrhetic and can't hold it long... my mom puts her out constantly but if she is out and Cookie has to go she goes on the pad. My mom trained 5 dogs with pads first and then taking them out and all were well potty trained.

Candy however, we waited to long, plus she is a thick head, so we are still having training issues.

Our dog is right around 5 months now... we took him outside (only in our backyard) as soon as we got him which was like a month ago. He just got the last of his shots today so now he can finally start going for walks! YAY!

i think it depends on the dog. past dogs i have tried the pads with have only shredded them to pieces and wasted my money cuz i had to keep buying them. i didnt want my dog in the habit of going in the house even if it was on a pad.

I don't have any great potty training tips, we're still working on that ourselves . . . Aiming for both outside and wee wee pads when outside isn't possible.

I wanted to address what you mentioned about the collar though. What breed of dog do you have? I ask because some of the toy breeds really shouldn't wear collars (it can lead to trachea collapse, you might want to google it) and you should get a harness instead. We have a Yorkie and were told only to use a harness when walking him, they can really hurt themselves pulling against a collar. If you don't have a little dog this might not be a problem, just mentioning it since you said you were buying such small collars. Congrats on your puppy!
