I hope you don't get picked.

I also don't get why they don't give Jury Duty to all those poor UNEMPLOYEED people who are struggling to find work and could use the $$$.

The good thing is that since I live in Manorville, I get to sleep in a lil on Monday. It'll only take me like 15/20 min to get there!

omg i totally acted like a flake when i went. I took out a nail file and was filing my nails (My job doesnt pay for anything when u have jury duty so I did not want to get stuck)

Then at one point the lawyer asked a question to me and i ignored him and then started to pick at my nails,,. and he said my name again and I wa slike 'Um huh?

Also, they dont want to pay the unemployed for JD cause they are already paying their unemployment (Thats what I was told by my moms boss)

Grand Jury Duty and regular petit Jury Duty are very different.

I edited out the rest of this post.

Re: Grand Jury Duty

My hubby got called for Grand Jury and also had to go to Riverhead. They said if he was selected, it would be a minimum of 4 weeks. Once he was there, they said that he could postpone, even though he had already taken his one postponement or he could wait for the raffle selection. He chanced it and was out by 2pm and can't be called for I think 6 years again.

I hope this makes you more optimistic!

Re: Grand Jury Duty

hope you don't have to serve!!! here's my knowledge

I had grand jury duty two years ago. . where I went it was basically impossible to get out of unless you had a serious excuse and then they just postponed it. . this was in manhattan though.

I went and they only excused a few people but after that it was just a lottery to get chosen - they didn't ask questions of anyone or anything. . good news is if you don't get picked you're totally off the hook. .

I had jury duty for two weeks, every day. . I actually had to be the foreperson which was kind of fun bc I had to swear everyone in, ask the lawyers questions etc. . weird though. .

Honestly I would do what my father did - (granted he was telling a truthful statement) but just answer each question stating that you cannot make a fair judgment due to the fact that someone in your family is in law enforcement and your opinions are already biased because of that.

That doesn't work for GJ duty. It's different. You're only listening to evidence to determine if there's legally sufficient evidence that a crime was committed and reasonable cause to believe that the Defendant is the one who committed the crime.

You vote on indictments in the Grand Jury, not guilt or innocence. It's a MUCH lower standard of evidence.

For GJ duty you don't get asked questions about your fairness at all. Sorry.

Heather - I'm glad to hear you had fun in GJ duty.

I honestly used to love being there with the GJ and you could tell even without talking to them who was happy to be there. The first few days some people were always super pissed off, but sometimes they got into it and even enjoyed listening to the cases.

Too bad everyone is sworn to secrecy... you could have a lot of fun retelling some of those stories.

OMG that's totally true - a lot of the cases were boring but there was one that was sooo ridiculous and amazing and the whole thing just gave you this insight into another world. . and of course there was little emotional pressure of actually delivering a verdict or coming to consensus so it didnt get heavy in that way. . it was funny occassionaly to watch the other grand jury members start to act like they were on a detective show or something. .and it was like - um we just have to decide if they have to go to trial - that's all. ..
