Grrr....name change vent **Update**
I received the check in the mail today, so I called my bank regarding it being in my maiden name. You were right - they said all I need to do is double-endorse it and it will be accepted, because they have a marriage license on file...I still need to go to BOCES to fill out the paperwork, but at least I don't have to wait to get paid! Whew! Thanks for your help girls!!!****************************
I have been working the same summer job for 3 years. This year, I sent a new application to BOCES (as always) and wrote my new married name and even indicated that I was formerly Marni XXX. I put my new address and everything else that was updated...
I called them yesterday cause I still hadn't received my paycheck that was mailed last week. They tell me 'oops, it was sent to your old address and in your maiden name!'.......I could scream!! I really need that money right now.
They say that I need to fill out new paperwork with my married name (W4s, etc.).....I'm like huh? For my full-time job, all I needed to do was provide them with my marriage license and that was it. So now I have to drive to Seaford and fill out this crap and still not have my paycheck. The only way they can reissue me a new one is when they get the old one back - so I have to wait till it's forwarded from my old address and then bring it in.....and then wait again for the new one to be generated! Meanwhile I'll be on vacation!!!!!!!! Can you believe this?????????????

Sue-That's what the lady said to me too......but the bank where our joint acct. is never knew me by my maiden name......maybe if I show my marriage license??? You think that might work? Thanks!

Re: Grrr....name change vent (LONG)
First, you should tell them to cancel the check and issue a new one. This can be done if they do payroll themselves or use a service. There is NO REASON you should not be paid because they made a mistake!!! Ask them for a manual check!!!Second, as for the paperwork, every place handles it differently. But technically, your employer should always have a current W-4 on file.
I'm sorry for the headaches

Re: Grrr....name change vent (LONG)
Christine - I'm not sure if they can issue a manual check from BOCES.......you're right though - I shouldn't have to wait for them. The lady even said, well did you indicate this was a change from last year on your application?? I said, well, what is the point of filling out an application annually if you don't take notice of changes, but YES, I did indicate that I was formerly under a different name...She says 'well, then I'll take half the blame!'......ugh!!!!!!!

Re: Grrr....name change vent (LONG)
They have to have a checking account they can do this on!! (I work in the p/r dept of my company). It's a pain in the a$$ because they have to cancel the check through the bank (and pay a fee) and then issue a new check. They might have to make a correction with their payroll company as well. If they are too **** lazy to read your application and make legal changes you told them to make - they are certainly too lazy to do all that.
And how gracious of her to accept half the blame!

Re: Grrr....name change vent (LONG)
I will call them before I go over there and discuss it. I want to wait for my mail to come today before I head over there, because maybe the check will come and then I can kill 2 birds with one stone. If not, then I will call them before I go.......unfortunately my mail doesn't come until around 2:30 (and their office closes at 3:30), so I will update you when I know something...Thanks for your help!!

Re: Grrr....name change vent (LONG)
I had to fill out some new forms with my name change. Most companies will not just cut a new check quickly. you can ask them though.

Re: Grrr....name change vent (LONG)
MArni,Just show the bank your marriage cert. that should work. also give the branch a call and tell them your problem, they can tell you right over the phone if they will accept it or not, i cant see it being a problem.

Re: Grrr....name change vent (LONG)
Keep us posted! I hope it all works out quickly. I know that if me or anyone in our payroll department makes a mistake we go out of our way to correct the problem ASAP!! It can take as little as 5 minutes for us to replace a check as long as there is someone here to sign it.
