guests who didn't give gifts???

Original post by lizrio

i was wondering, it is very awkward when you have a few people who you don't seem to have a gift from....do you just forget it? I am starting my thankyous, and there are a few couples who I don't have as giving anything, and they are good family friends. My mom is afraid that the gift may have been lost...Did anyone have this issue? Thanks!

Martha Stewart? huh? You're not benefiting anyone by using this board as your platform to be, as you said, a wise-a$$. You don't sound wise, but you are showing that you may very well be an......

32 guests no card

my husbands family came down from Massachusettes. They asked what to bring as a gift, he replied well we are saving for a house, and we recieved a lot of things at the shower, so they said fine cash, no problem that makes it easy. no gifts, no cards were given. I sent thank-yous for coming, it was so hard to do I want to send them a bill. I did it for my husbands sake, I know he was embarressed by his family's behavior, I did not want to drag out the issue.

Re: everyone - Relax

I have to agree with Kate here...she did do the right thing by sending a thank you note, regardless of whether or not a gift was given. It is a very classy gesture on your part, as the bride, to thank all guests for sharing your happiness on your wedding day.

There's no ettiquette book that says you must have received a token or check to take the time to write a word of thanks. Kate's not being Martha Stewart (lets not forget Martha's current woes with the stock market - she's got her hands full with the SEC right now)...Kate just sounds like a very nice person who did the right thing.

As for the women who suggest letting it go and not mentioning a missing gift to your guests, I also agree. It is in poor taste to ask where their gift is. Like someone else said, if a card with a check got lost or was stolen, then the guest will call to ask why the check hasn't cleared their bank account. This happened with a few of my guests, since there was nearly a month between my wedding and when I was finally able to deposit our checks (we lived out in CA, and we left our gifts with my parents when we went on our honeymoon.)

I have to agree with those that sent a card even if no gift was given. Although I was only 'missing' one gift, I did wonder where it was, was it lost, did they forget, can they not afford anything, etc. But, I would not have felt right not sending a thank you card. After all, I was so happy that they were there to celebrate with me. I think that a person who doesn't send a thank you card seems more rude than someone who doesn't give a gift. If someone doesn't give a card, then I would be upset. JMO

Re: gift-giving and thank yous

We received a gift today - from the couple I was most upset about not getting one from (we went through a lot of effort to go to their wedding and gave them a great gift - I felt it was only fair of them to reciprocate).

I had already sent them a thank you a few weeks ago- now they'll get another. yay!

Re: I have a good one

My FIL made us invite alot of his friends who didn't show and sent no gift. On top of that my FIL never gave us a gift or a card, just a verbal IOU, a card would have REALLY been appreciated. LOL we will be married 2 years in February

Nevertheless much to my husband's chagrin I did send a thank you note.
